Fn Fal

As per peter2772000:
They're heavy muthers. They shoot very well, and are pretty accurate. But they're freakishly long & weigh a freakin' ton.
.....agreed; I had an L1A1 in the mid 80's. Size aside, they are high quality shootin irons......NO Mattel spoken here. The AK, a rifle for the masses; the FN, a rifle for the classes. Wish I still had it, but I would sure be ticked at not being able to take it out to shoot it; out of all our questionable gun laws, this is surely the silliest.

I carried a C1A1 in the Forces, had an L1A1 at home, even went moose hunting with my L1 one year, way back. That was then. Now I use my N14 and it works just as well and I like it just a little more than the old FN.

My Norc M-14 is much more portable than the FN, and I do prefer the handling charachteristics of the M-14 over the FN for sure.

Honestly, unless you have particular affection for the Rhodesian civil war, or the Falklands thingy (or the Belfast thingy) there really isn't much about the FN that merits the awe in which it is held (especially here). .... I just don't get the younger generation's love for the beast.

More than that. FN was the symbol of free world in its global fight against commie aggression and terrorism during the cold war days muck like AK was the symbol of commie revolutionary movements around the world.

FN = Good guys
AK = Commie evils

EXACTLY!

The kids here these days just don't get it: The AR has been around since the "ancient times" of Vietnam, and they seem to think it is the cat's arse of "us" vs "them".

That's what my Dad's generation said about the Lee Enfield vs the FN :D In the scheme of things when it came down to combat an officer once told me that the brass would be thrilled if we lasted the first 24 hours on the line against the Warsaw Pact.

The damned things are heavy, difficult in thick brush, or tight quarters- (house clearing's a treat trust me) and have edges where there should not be edges. That said since it's what I learned on and I would carry one despite it's short comings - I just don't get the younger generation's love for the beast. Maybe it's 'cause they never had to run with one held above their heads wearing a beret with the liner removed and the mag point downward? (I swear there's still a divott there)

A lot of it comes down to the fact that they look sweet - although I'd rather have the ability to own/fire a G3 variant rather than a FAL.

I'm still scratching my head over the FN is long and heavy compared to an AR (and an M14??? The abortion of re-work of the re-work of an M1???)

From wikipedia:

FN FAL 1090mm o/a length, 8.8-9.8 lbs, depending on heavy barrel / bipod

M16A2 1000mm, 8.5 lbs (without flashlight, laser, acog, fork, spoon, marital aid, etc.)

M14 1181mm, 11.51lb.

Obviously, wikipedia is comparing apples to oranges - I suspect the M14 weight is loaded - But still, if I recall correctly from battle school, the C1A1 was 11.4lbs loaded, WITH bayonet attached. And I don't recall the C7s feeling any lighter when you humped then for more than a few hours?

I guess I'll just have to be happy with my Enfields, too!

Hi,
I'm new to the forums, but I've been wondering if a case could be made like the case for the Valmet Hunter or Valmet M78. There is a company in the states that makes a hunting version of the SA58/FAL rifle. The company's name is DSArms ; also there is several companies in the states who make California legal FN Fal rifles.
Probably won't happen any time soon, but I just figured that this could be one possible arguement that could help convince the powers that be to make an exception.

Good idea.

Things to overcome:
Most Valmets are prohib, some are in canada as legal restricted or non restricted, but something has stopped their further importation and raised their price.

Most of the trouble is getting a gun out of the states. After that, it's getting the CFC to recognise it as a legal firearm and not a derivative of a prohib firearm (which in turn makes it a prohib). From how it was explained to me - making a complete FAL from scratch would be illegal, because the FAL was prohibited by name, not by characteristics.

I asked a similar question a while ago, and the answer was basically: DSArms makes firearms that they explicitly market as FAL variants, thus we're hooped. In order to make a viable case, it would have to be a firearm that had a reasonably different receiver from the FAL, and was named something entirely different.

Hey hey HEY! Watch it with the Poodle slanderin', boy! :slap:

I'll have you know that my PitPoodle is a born-to-kill attack dog with many missing cats/small children to her credit. See fer yerself....

We have a Poodle/Pit Bull cross. Not much of a guard dog but she's a vicious gossip!:p

The aforementioned "straight pulls" are expensive garbage. They won"t shoot worth a £$%^ and if you load them anywhere near decent velocity they won"t extract as they lack the camming advantage of a proper bolt action. I have used M4"s with a T handle that had to have the sling wrapped around the T handle so you had somewhere to rest your foot when trying to extract empties.
I don"t think that"s worth the equivelent of $3000 Cad!
I think the M14 design is hard to beat, all things considered.

Thanks for the replies, guys. It was just a question I had been wondering about in the back of my mind for a while. Let's just hope that some day the laws will change enough that creative thinking like this won't be necessary (one can dream, can't they?)

So what are you allowed to own and shoot in the UK. Unless your IRA in which case you can shoot anything ?
