The problem with Hi-Powers (and many other military firearms) is that serial numbers are contract specific. Purchasers could specify a specific serial block , continue the existing serial sequence or start from #1.

As an example, a friend has a Hi-Power that the serial number would date in the late '30s, but has features which reveal that it must have been built between 1958 and '61ish.

Another problem with Hi-Powers is that apparently a lot of FN records got destroyed or otherwise lost during WWII. Keep looking, though, and you may find out.

The pistol has a *N - so far it seems to be about 1938 vintage - one odd marking is an oval with E over GB over a star - also has H in a circle.

How about a pic or two :)
I was told my 4 digit (serial number) HP was made in '39 ?

I also used to own a (definite) post war FN HP with a serial in the 45,000 range. If I recall, it was dated to '51.

BTW, FNHipower.com is history.
If you do a search on http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/ there is some old archive material someone found from the FNHP site.
I found it hard to find anything usefull there though
