FN mauser 98, 22" barrel, 30-06 loads?

Hey fellas

I am about to start load development for a JC Higgins 30-06 that Mr Why Not? was generous enough to sell me a few months ago. Since I have always shied away from common cartridges and pretty much stuck to wildcats or cartridges that never really caught mainstream attention, after 30 years of reloading I will be finally loading the 06! Most of my rifles are either large overbore, or small like the hornet.

I will be loading 180 partitions in Nosler brass. Don't have any other -06 brass at this time.

What I am posting this for is opinions on your favourite powders for the -06. Has anyone found a powder that in the -06 with 180's that has seemed rather exceptional? I have most powders on hand that can be used except I have no Vihtavouri at all.

I have had good luck with Reloader powders in the 270 Win, like RL 19 and 22, as well as AA powders. BL-C2, W760 and H414 are three I like a lot as well.

Don't bother giving me the charge weights, I just want to hear from the experts what their favourite powders are for this old girl. I could load up about 30 of each powder, go through 10 or 20 boxes of partitions, but I would rather not spend that much, lol.
 
4064, going to have to get a lb of that.... I have both H and IMR 4350, as well as H4831SC, those are the to to powders for many of my rifles.

I wonder what Ramshot and AA powders would work well...

I have had good results for accuracy with powders from 4350 to RL22 in speed. In most of them the most accurate were not the higher velocity loads.

If you want both accuracy and velocity, try a case full of 760.
 
Isn't H414 the same powder as W760? I seem to remember reading that somewhere and in the data I have shows the same charge, speed and pressures for both.
 
I've pretty much standardized on IMR 4350 for the 180/.30-06. I've had good results accuracy wise with W760 and 165 grainers.

W760 and H414 are the same, as is W296 & H110.

AA4350... Interesting, thanks Ted!

Since I don't have any, looks like I'll be ordering some AA and Vihtavouri powders soon... In the mean time I'll try some 760, RL19 and H4350....

On the other hand, BL-C(2) keeps staring at me from across the room, lol.

760 and H414 are the same powder.
In my '06 I use IMR 4350 with excellent results. I've also had good luck with 760/H414.
 
I keep a can of IMR 4350 in the house just for the. 30-06. I have had great results with 180 grain Nosler partitions and Hornady Interlocks as well as 190 grain Hornady spire point boat tails using 4350. I have read of people who prefer reloaded 22 in their 06 but I save that for the 6.5 Swede.

My current .30-06 is an old Husky, so similar to your rifle. They shoot really well and the FN actions are fantastic.

That rifle shoots very well with all of the 4350 powders. The AA is just a tad faster than the others.

57 gr of H4350 is VERY accurate, so give some of that a try, especially since you already have some. :)

Will do, so to make thinks simple I will try partitions with H4350 and W760. I will report back once I have a few loads developed.
