I have a refurbished FN49 with the Eagle crest on the top of the receiver, Arabic writing beneath the Eagle crest. I think it is 8mm but have not fired it until I know for sure as there is no calibre markings on it at all. Anybody help short of taking it to a gunsmith as I live in the boonies, thanks, Alex.

You could try to 'loosely' insert a round I stress loosely.....

Know any machinists? Find some one with a set of small hole gauges, and you will be able to figure out the bore size. From there it's just a little detective work, as they were only availabe in 7x57, 8x57 and 30-06 I believe. You could even figure out the bore size with bullets, actually. Either use jacketed ones (243 will fit in the bore of the 7x57, 7mm will fit in the bore of the 30-06, 30 cal will fit in the bore of the 8x57 etc. These are approximations, as I'm doing this from memory). Better to use lead if you have it, drive it through the bore and measure, but the other way will work with a little creativity. - dan

If it is Egyptian, likelyhood is good that it is 8mm Mauser....even a 30.06 is a sloppy fit in the bore...should be fairly easy to figure out.
