Hello and Greetings from a Yank in California!!

I'm an old fart, 59, retired Timber Faller, among other things, and love to shoot M1 Garands. I shoot them for fun and in competition. I also build them. I am the rangemaster for Centerfire Rifle Silhouette at out local gun club here in Westwood, CA., a small town of 2000 in the transition zone between the Sierras and the Cascade Mountains in Northeastern California.
(5200 feet in elevation) I also compete in NRA Highpower, (reduced range and OTC) as well as other competitions in Nevada. Also an avid reloader since the age of 16. My Dog and I will be making the road-trek to Alaska this Fall and I would like to inquire about local clubs and shooting ranges/competitions along the way, in BC. I'm no whiz-bang... shooting irons at my age should attest to that. I just like to shoot
M1's, meet fellow shooters and enjoy the scenery with my Dog.
That about sez it all!
Cheers!

Welcome to CGN.
I'm probably right on your trail through B.C.. It's pretty quiet at our ranges in North/central B.C., but I would be glad to invite you to the range on your way through.

Thank you for the welcomes! Dog and I will travelling through BC in late August and September. With so much to see, we may not even make it to Alaska.
Smokepole, where is your range in North Central BC? I may take you up on your offer. I will be bringing an M1, (what else?) if Customs says OK. If any one has function/accuracy problems with their Garand, I may be able to help them out. I'm not an 'armorer', but I have taken several M1 armorer's classes at our excellent gunsmithing school, (Lassen College), and I do know my way around the beasties.

Cheers

I'm sure that your "services on garand's" would be welcome. vancouver bc has many owners of these fine rifles.......

Welcome to the Nutz house. If you PM me your email addy I'll send you a copy of everything you need to know about bringing your rifle with you.

Cheers nessy.

Welcome to the mighty CGN!
This site has a lot of info on Canadian law for US shooters.

It has a few minor mistakes, but overall its very good info.

Also, have a look at the Newbie FAQ Section, the link is in my signature below.

Thanks for the information! A delightful lady named Joan, whom I believe is afilliated with BCTSA, has sent me info over the last few months, with information/forms about going thru Customs with a long gun.
Don't think I will get to the Vancouver area, as I'm people shy, kinda the pupose of the trip. Smokepole, Prince Rupert is not one of my planned stops either, but I'll keep it in mind. Don't know how you go out on those fishing boats. Just being on the water scares the bejesus out of me. Thank all of you for the greetings!

bushpig: Your Vintage Military Rifle shoot sounds interesting. What is the course of fire?
I shoot a competition near Pyramid Lake, Nevada called, 'Military Rifle Silhouette'. Regulation size animals, but the ranges are 100M, 150M, 385M and 500M. We are only allowed to use military rifles produced prior to 1946, such as SMLE's, Garanda, Krags, Swedish Mausers etc. Course of fire is 40 shots, ten on each bank of animals, the same as regular silhouette. However, we shoot prone over 3 burlap bags filled with broken clay targets. Iron sights only. We shoot once a month and carry a handicap when we shoot 50% of the targets, (20/40), which most of us Yanks can do. After you score 20 or more in a match, the next month you shoot the chickens offhand. If you again manage to hit 20 while shooting chickens offhand, the next month you get to shoot chickens and pigs offhand, and so on. I gets very competitive toward the end of the season, with some shooters shooting turkeys (and sometimes rams) offhand. Needless to say, it really improves your offhand shooting! It is a lot of fun. Sudden death offhand shootoffs for tiebreakers. In the spring, everybody goes back prone at the first shoot and then it goes from there.
I'm pretty sure I won't be able to make your Vintage shoot, unless I change my schedule. I am interested in the course of fire if you can provide it. Thank you for the invite.
