hey fellas,
a while back I went thru the motions to gain a synthetic stock for the hawkeye m77, 35 whelen.

I stumbled onto a Ramline after efforts to have a original stock sent from Canada.

anyway its been a while, an hunted a little bit with that particular rifle and have just packed it for a 10 day alpine hunt next week.

upon grabbing it from the safe an giving it a once over, I noticed the issue in the photos.

before I show the photos, up until today, I was very pleased with my cheap synthetic stock, the feel an lop were great. recoil pad was better than rugers and after a little bit of sanding on the joins it was all well an good.

So here some photos, pretty minor IMO but wanting to hear what you think this may cause, or the problems around it.

upon looking at the original wood stock, the side which has the issue is cut out different to the opposing side, cut out slightly more on the effected side down to where the piece has chipped.... hence why I don't think its a major?

I'd pull the action from the stock. The recoil lug is not taking up all the recoil and the action is sliding back on recoil.
The recoil pad behind the recess for the recoil lug may be buggered up or it may just be sloppy fit. If it is a sloppy fit you have to b glass bed the recoil lug as a minimum and relieve the rear if the action so it does not damage the stock. I would suggest like I said pulling the action and taking pictures of the inletting in the stock and post them You can get advice from that point so there is no use in me speculating further at this time.

Thanks neil,
when I get back from the alpine hunt I will pull it from the stock.

I have my t3 308 as my hike rifle and this as a backup / gulley stalking rifle.

I put 10 shots through it today and when I did my part the rifle went inside the 1.5 inch group for 3, which is average for the rifle.

I don't have time too do much about it as far as bedding goes although on this trip it will be lucky to fire a shot, an if im lucky maybe 2... and that's if I have the whelen in my hands :)

Yup .... Looks like a bedding issue not unlike the common crack behind the tang on a Mauser. Tang breaks because it's taking the recoil instead of the lug.

looking on the other side though, it looks like maybe it was my fault for not allowing a small gap between metal an stock, the rear (tang) is fine but the sides where it has chipped is proberly touching with just enough pressure that after a few shots it has chipped.

ive not fired many through since the stock swap. an only just noticed.

suppose ill need it bedded after this hunt
