Some was just in the garage, going through my "parts bin". I recall that my one rifle hasn't been cleaned since that thing in June.....
And this memory comes flooding back......
This past June one of the clubs I'm involved with was having a "first shot" day. A come and go, grab a hotdog or a burger and shoot our guns, we'll provide the ammo! (Kind of a "see not all rifle looneys are actually crazy" and "guns are a good time" open house) I of course show up with a tuned up Norinco M-14s and a troy 10.3" AR.
All day long person after person is telling me "that wasn't that bad" and after 500 rounds of 308 (5 rounds per person) this wee little snip of a girl walks up to me and asks "can I try it"? I ensure that her folks are around (just her Mom as it turns out) and that they are OK with the idea. She is maybe 12yrs old at most and weighs less than 80lbs soaking wet. We were shooting that rifle off the bench and she had to sit on her feet to get high enough to see the sights and the target. I positioned a front rest for her to use, explained how the sights work. She jumped a bit on the first shot, settled right back into the rifle, I gave her a few more pointers, ensured that she was shooting at the right target. She then rang the gong at 100y with the next 4 shots. With a gin from ear to ear she says to me, "that's not nearly as bad as gram-pas goose gun". The next words outta her mouth were "can I do it again"? I told her to come back after a few others has tried it out. She did come back a little bit later and a 12" gong at 220y was no match for her! 5/5 ringing steel!
I'm hoping that in some later time in her life when some "person" starts sprackin-off about "guns control" she will think back to that day and remember that we are good folks, friendly and helpful and just wanna do something that turns our crank.....
And I still haven't cleaned that rifle....... But I really don't like taking out of the stock, and all of a sudden I'm thirsty again!
Cheers!
