We are contemplating buying one for our own use. Can anyone throw some light on these things? Are they good for preventing freezer burn, etc? Any help is appreciated.

Foodsaver is great, I use one for all of my game sausage. I have found sausage in the bottom of the deep freeze after 1 year, fresh as the day I made it. It is awesome if used on fish. Catch, filet and freeze. It will be like out of the lake months later.

I picked one up at costco last spring and finally used it on thurs when I cut up 1/2 my elk. IIRC it is a sportsman model kit, $100 and came with 4 rolls and some precut bags. Several family members have been using them for years and they do work well to preserve meat, especially fish. It is slower than freezer bags or paper so only used it for roasts/steaks. I was warned not to get a basic model because they can overheat if used continuously. I had no issues with mine sealing a dozen or so back to back.

That looks like the same model I have. I have used it for about 3 years and am pleased with it. Look at Costco or e-bay for good deals on bags.
I also have got the mason jar attachements for storing dry goods in jars; coffee beans etc.

Check the disaster/survival prep forum for more info.
