Went out last night to my usual spot North of the house about 500y. Setup with my caller and decoy about 30 feet north of me in the cut lentils, while I lay in the tall wild oats and grass that separates the 1/4 sections. My view is east and north east to the valley about 300 yards closest spot. Can't see to the north to well because of the grass cover.
Well, called one in real quick and ill be damned if all of the sudden he just popped out into my sight in my limited north view and right to caller and decoy and clearly smelled me and realized the caller was fake. Couldn't get my rifle into play quick enough and missed 2 shots. First shot shoulda been 00 buck, and it would been success. Guess I'll have to tote the ole baikal with me. This is the second time I have been burned at about 30 yards, and a shotty would been a good solution. Even tried the ole howl/ bark trick and it was a big nope for him .
