I am wanting to get into hte world of carbines. I'm thinking that i want one of these two to start (both eventually, but that's later). I think either way, i'd go for the restricted versions as i live in the city and only shoot at the range anyway.

So with all your sage knowledge here, which one do you folks recommend? The M1 is a sweet looking little rifle and i'm sure it's reliable. The VZ is also sharp lookinh, but i have concerns that some of them are lemons, have the recent shipments from Marstar been dependable or are there still function issues with them at all?

The cost of ammo isn't a HUGE factor in my decision, realistically and sadly i don't get out enough for either to break me.

Opinions and ideas are welcome :D :D

The VZ would be easier and cheaper for ammo but I would definitely pick the M1 carbine. The VZ is a terrorist looking gun, The M1 carbine is a piece of Americana.

I have an M1 and love it so it got my vote, that said I have never owned or even fired a VZ.
Handled one at Al Simmons a few weeks ago and while it was definatly a cool little gun I was not overly impressed.

Casper, you might want to look into our youth forum. I think you have to be at least 13 to be on "adult" gun nutz! That's why we can handle a "terrorist looking gun". The youth forum won't allow talk of such scary, inappropriate firearms!

They are very different guns, intended for somewhat different purposes. My suggestion is to shoot both of them, and then make a decision (or buy both).

I love my terrorist looking VZ-58S. It looks good in my safe next to my counter-terrorist looking AR-15. Occasionally I worry that they'll go all Counter Strike on me and spontaneously start shooting at each other in my safe, but it hasn't happened yet.

Seriously, though, would you call a turban a "terrorist looking hat"? Ok, maybe some of you would ...

Always remember, a gun is a gun is a gun. What it looks like, how it functions, and what it fires does not change the fact that the person with their finger on the trigger is solely responsible for its use or misuse. It was "terrorist looking guns" that the powers that be decided should be banned, so that we cannot purchase them anymore.

My vote is for the VZ-58S or CZ-858. I don't know that there were many "lemons", per se. I've put maybe 300 rounds through mine without a single failure of any sort. The biggest complaint about the VZ-58S I've seen is regarding their finish (chipped and scratched paint, epoxy plug in receiver, etc). I've come to love the rather rough finish on mine ... makes it seem more like an authentic military item, function over looks. The CZ-858s I've seen have had much nicer paint and general finish, but I think the longer barrel makes it look and feel unbalanced, and non-restricted is little benefit to me. I also prefered the wear and corrosion resistance of the shorter, chrome lined barrel.

VZ-58S gets my vote!
M1 carbine has pricey ammo and the VZ also has pretty high LCF.
I went with the VZ because it is the closest thing to the original.
It also has a chromed barrel (extended barrel life and corrosion resistance).
Oh, and Milarm had the best price on these at the time as well.

I have both M1 carbine and VZ 58. You will shoot either a bit and the they will keep each other company in the safe. I think I would give the upper hand to the VZ for the cool factor.

+1 The man speaks with wisdom. :)

Totally correct! A nice non-norinco AR-15 is definately the way to go if you are going restricted class. A nice Springfield M-1A if you want non-restricted.:D

Save your money and buy an AR. You will just end up doing it anyways.

You always have to be the voice of reason don't you Mike? lol:p I really want an AR too but if i went for one i'd want one of the Stag Arms lefties and i just won't be able to drop 1500 in the very near future. Hmmm, too.... many.... choices.... brain feeling....pressure....aaaaahhhggggg!!! :D

I've never fired either of them but I know I would pick the CZ/VZ over the M1. If the ammo were priced the same I would get the M1 but it certainly is not and I don't buy a rifle unless it fires cheap rounds so I can afford to shoot a lot of it. So amongst many other reasons stated above I'd go for the CZ/VZ. But you guys have to admit, the CZ/VZ does look an awful lot like an AK47 which the media has labelled as a "terrorist" gun, one to be feared and despised... BUAHAHA.
