I think they are both nice, but the M1 carbine round leaves much to be desired. If you get a restricted weapon it will remain registered to you as long as you have it, and WTSHTF the PTB will know where to find it.

Take a photo of each with you in front of a mirror, gaze at one photo then check how dialated your eyes are. Pick the rifle that makes your eyes dialate the most :)

I think the best thing to do would be to go take your buddies guns to the range and give them both a try.

Buy both. Shoot the 858 more. M1 ammo is getty expensive.
Tony
You know, I have to go with Tony on this one.
Although the M1 is a nice, collectable & practical little rifle.....it's gonna cost you more to shoot it than a Vz/Cz rifle. 7.62 x 39mm is just so damned cheep compared to anything else (okay.... .22 excepted). You'll get alot more practical experience and have more fun shooting more than less.

The lefty model isn't all that special. It's a neat novelty, but the standard modern AR-15 is easily managable from both sides.

Big +2. Save the dough for 14.5" or 16" AR, and when you do get one, keep it simple. Resist the urge to pimp it out.

man that's a really sharp looking setup. What'd it set you back including the Elcan? If you don't mind me asking.

The rifle is an all-parts gun -Barrel, gas tube, Bolt, Lower Receiver, and fire control were new. Tel-stock, pistol grip, upper receiver, handguards, charging handle & Elcan were gently used / next to new. I figure the rifle came in around $1100. Elcan was $600.

VZ 858

It's so nice to be able to have a rifle that you can take anywhere and shoot without having to have an ATT for it.

Take it gopher hunting to impress your friends. The ammo IS that cheap.

If you are going to get a resticted rifle, then yes, I'd get an AR-15 over either.
