I have read just about everthing on both these rounds. (or at least I think I have).
I will be shooting factory ammo ONLY, I just dont have space/time for a reloader.

Now it seems a fast twist .223 and a .308 are pretty close for targets.
Both can be used on gophers, although I guess .308 is a bit overkill if you believe in that word :p

But for some reason when I shoot a .223 with a bipod, heavy barrel, scope, it just reminds me of a .22 or pellet gun too much, and doesnt seem as "fun" as a 308 because the 308 has a bigger bang.

Is it wrong to pick one round over the other because it makes a bigger bang?

if you are not going to load or have rounds loaded for you....

223 if you got lots of coin for ammo 308

It wouldn't be wrong to buy whichever one makes you grin more.

But if money is in the equation at all, and you really want to work at your markmanship skills, get the 223, it is less than half as expensive to shoot.

Sounds like your a candidate for a .50BMG, no its not wrong, its a preferance!;) :D

If I could go to the local gun store and pick up a box of .50bmg rounds I would seriously concider it.
While I *could* afford the 8-10k + ammo costs, I wouldnt be able to use it very often.

I have looked into the 338 though too, but I dunno, might still be a bit "big" for where I shoot.

Jeff get yourself a Rem 700 Police in .223 with 26" barrel 1/9 twist, they have them at Wholsale Sports, or you can get them in .308 as well
If want you could order new for 2007 from Remington modeel 700 XCR Tactical Stainless Barrel available in .223,.308 win and 300 win mag this is as close as you can get to a Custom made rifle.
I would go with the .223 and get some one you trust to load for you, these guns are capable of 1/2 groups or less with reloads
Good Luck

The XCR looks good, but I cant find it in .223 or 308 on the rem site.
I dont know if I want to get into the .300's either. I would still want to shoot gophers without the farmer thinking hes under attack, lol.
I dont know what model the "police" one is.

The Police model is called the M700P, I believe... I should know better since I just bought one for my wife and it landed here on Monday, 05 Feb 2006. I just tweaked the trigger to a 3 lb pull from the factory setting of 5 lbs. And then I screwed it back into it's delightful H&S Precision stock.

I bought it from Wholesale for $ 999 plus another chunk for shipping and taxes to end up somewhere around $ 1093 or thereabouts.

My wife will be shooting the 75 grainers up to 600m

Hope this helps your decision.

I had the same dilema a few months ago. I went with 223. I'm not hunting large game or shooting beyond 400m so the 308 wasn't worth the expense. Bought the Savage 10fp and put a Choate Varmint stock on it. It's good to go.

I have the Remington 700 PSS in .308. It will always be more accurate than me, but it is fun to shoot. Wheather you put mico sights on it or scope. Mcmillan stock or stay with the factory. It's just a lot of fun to shoot. Your Mausers are that way also if you guys can get them in Canada. Factory ammo is fine but if you want good accuracie you need to reload.
