Hello just a question out of curiosity.

For those who have examined or owned both the 9mm and .45ACP versions of the SIG Sauer P220, is the magazine well sized to the magazine or vice versa?

In other words, are the 9mm P220 magazines the same dimensions as the .45ACP magazines? Or are the frames sized differently for each calibre?

Thanks and appreciate any replies!

Frame is the same, mags are same length, just formed to the specific caliber. 9mm has a spacer at the rear of the mag to compensate for the shorter 9mm round.

Thanks, is it also the same for the thickness of the 9mm magazine?

i.e. are there side spacers in the magazine to compensate for the narrower 9mm cartridge compared to the .45ACP cartridge?

The mags fit and interchange nicely between the P220 9mm and P220 45 acp.

However, the top ends do not. At least not on my two, both German, both side mag release.

The feed ramps are different for the two pistols, and there must be some other difference too because the 9mm top end got stuck on my 45 P220. It took me a few minutes to work it off, no damage done that I could see. Avoid this.

The 9mm P220 also doesn't take the P220 .22 kit successfully. I think I got mine firing but the hold open lever is jammed by something. I didn't study it at any length, but it's probably the .22 ejector that forms part of the barrel. The same kit works flawlessly on the P220 .45 ACP version.

The P220 and P226 also don't interchange, there is a plunger in the wrong place and you get no trigger reset (P226 top en on P220 .45 ACP version). The slide at least fits. The P220 9mm slide will not fit on my P226, and again, these are all German / no rail guns.

I hope this helps!

There is a ridge molded into the sides of the mags.

if you buy "modern" Sig 220 grips, for the .45 version...will they fit the older 9mm 220s?

Yup, if you have a side button mag release, you can use modern day grip. My P220 9mm with Hogue G10 grips:

In fact, you can put an SRT trigger kit into a 9mm P220 without any issues.

The locking insert is different 9 to 45. If you replace it on a 9 then the 45 top end will fit on.
I ran a 9mm P220 as a range gun for years, when the slide finally cracked on it, I used the top end of an old 45ACP gun that had had a frame failure and got more years out of the combo.
