For people who wonder if a 30-30 can do it.

I have never got involved in the 30-30 vs the other cartridge for big game. I just happened upon this thread and I guess I will ask - although 30-30 is fine (perhaps with some limitations?) for moose, if there are better cartridges out there why not use them instead?

Nobody is saying that a 30.30 is the best possible choice, just that it is a viable choice.

We usually tie an antler to the canoe, float down the river to the first clean gravel bar to drag him out, then go to work. :)

How'd you get him up on shore that far? I don't see any trees nearby for come-along usage. Long rope? :D

Nice moose and an even nicer location for butchering. Looks to be about as easy as it gets for Yukon giants!

Most people forget that when the 30-30 was introduced, hutners were mostly still using black powder cartridges. They thought the 30-30 was some sort of death ray when they started using it.

Baaahh. You guys keep working your jaws about this or that. The problem is the 30-30 platforms; they are unweildy and awkward when you put a Huskemaw on it. :D

You have it right, a come-along and a long rope. You can see the rope still attached to the left antler. It was raining heavily, and he slid up on the heavy gravel quite easily. It was a very nice spot to take him apart. :)

You seem to forget the mighty fine offerings from Savage - the 219 single shot, the 325 bolt action and, for the Eastern Fudds who desire a Huskemaw (or King Optics) equiped .30-30, the Model 170 Pump action. Very disappointed in you good Sir. Very disappointed.

My late Brother's Wife preferred her 219 Savage over other heavier, faster rifles because it was very accurate and quite handy to carry.
Over the years she bagged a few Caribou with it and I believe one Bull Moose.

I know a lady in her 80s now who used to regularly knock moose down with her Marlin Glenfield 30-30.

I have a love/hate relationship with the 94 Win. I love the gun but I'll be damned if I can shoot one worth a hill of beans.

Guessing this is what he used?

Note the velocity - Slow. Note the bullet weight and construction - sturdy, and heavy.

Plowed a nice big hole through that moose. Moose tipped over. They didn't show how long it took for the moose to finally expire but it was alive while lying there for a bit.

But it worked and there is no reason to doubt it. For me, it is matching the bullet and impact velocity to the type of wound channel I want.

The cartridge just gets it to the distance I want to be working.

Neither could I, any rifle with conventional open sights for that matter...Can't recall all the deer I missed with my 30-30, so much so I can remember missing 7 in one day.:sok2. I got very good at speeding deer up without cutting a hair...That all changed when I installed a peep on my model 64 mid season some 20+ years ago....Ever since then it's been either peep, or optics.. Everyone I grew up hunting with used open sights ONLY, and always conveyed that a scope had no place in the deer woods, and laughed at a peep...Wasn't long before a few of the guys had peeps installed, then red dots, and scopes..

Back on topic..
A nicer carrying rifle you will never find..If you are confident, it will serve you well for deer, and moose both...My uncle (long since passed) from northern Quebec took over 50 moose with a Model 94 in 32 Special....He was definately up to the task, along with the old cartrige he chose to use...It took me a bit to become a confident hunter, but today I would have no qualm toting a 30-30 moose hunting...

Years ago I could shoot the '94 with issue sights not bad, but the installation of peeps made all the difference. It will never compete with the best of bolt guns, but it will do as well as some.

I use 170 grain Hornady Interlocks for moose, and I don't hot load them, they have yet to fail me. BTW I don't take bad angle shots.

A 170 grain .30-30 is more than capable of putting a hole through both lungs of a moose and exitting. Last time I checked, any animal with a hole through both lungs is a dead animal.

I've seen lots of guys mess up shots on moose (and deer and bear also) because they were shooting something that they were afraid of. That never seems to be the case with the .30WCF...

This is why I miss mine. Sold it before I left Nova Scotia and have regretted it ever since.
