I found one Yup, Amberg 1903 mauser model 98. I was checking our local shop yesterday, I was in a rush and just jotted the details to check it out. Today I picked it up, stripped and cleaned it, oiled all the metal parts, the bore is VG no frosting or any of that.
It doesn't appear to been shot all that much from the bolt face and sear and the stock tells the story. It has the duffel cut stock, and it has never been put back together. The only missing part is the top handguard. ALL NUMBERS MATCH, everything, even the sling swivels are numbered, I have not found one part that is a miss match. So a winter project to put the stock together and find a top handguard.

Early ones like your amberg are not common, production was low and amberg generally only made thrm for bavaria but not always. Check the left side of the receiver, is there a lion proof stamp just forward of the serial number? if nothing is there, check the underside of the bolt handle. Is there a unit marking on the butt disc?

You must also post pictures :).
 
Amberg mauser. just ahead of the serial #, L side there is a lion proof stamp, on the R side there is 3 crown stamps, the under side of the bolt also has the lion stamp along with the crown and the letter R. The barrel is seial # matched, on the underside it has the lion and 3 crowns stamped plus the numbers B 37 B. The roller coaster rear sight is match serial #. The last 3 digets are on everything, including the action screws and the smaller set screws, trigger etc. Pics will come.

That's got to be the nicest Peruvian 1909 I've seen.

I have what I consider to be a very good or better one but nothing like yours.

The Peruvians had a bad habit of taking the bolts out of their rifles when they stacked them while bivouacing for the night. They supposedly did this to stop thieves from taking operational rifles. They had another bad habit of just grabbing a rifle an slipping in their bolt and carrying on from there. Mine seems to be one of these.

By the way, those South American Quill bayonets aren't easily come by either. Especially matching to the rifle. That is a very special set you hav there.

That's a very nice Gewehr 98, will come out beautiful after a little cleaning.

BTW, Marstar has K98 Hand guards in stock for $19.95.
I am quite sure they fit on the Gewehr as well.

Can someone tell for sure?

Wow! That Amberg is beautiful! A hard to find early dated one as well.

Polaris, that Peruvian is spectacular! Is it all matching? I have an all matching one but it isn't as new as yours. They are one of the nicest military rifles ever made IMHO.
 
Lovely Amberg. Happy new year to you. I note this rifle still has the early 200 metre rear sight base. Does the slider drag all the way back to 200?
