For those who like overkill...

A couple of us used to head into the alpine to knock off Columbian Ground Squirrels. This being many moons ago, we had nothing but our hunting rifles to do the job. They were both 30-06's, one Remington, one Winchester. The Load was that big open nosed 130 Speer hollowpoint FB at about 3200, chased by a healthy load of H4895. When we hit one of those little critters sitting on a patch of snow, it would paint a big area crimson!...Pure rapture!!
Regards, Eagleye.

"Both barrels in unison on a sterlingworth fox with 00 Buckshot is very good for spraying a porcupine out of a tree and into the next county if you have a steady breeze. Man that left a mark on this kid when he was 13 and 90lbs!
Do you wonder why I tend to flinch when I shoot now?"

 LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL I would have loved to see that.:)

:p :D Good times my friend, good times.
The neighbor used to use his 10 ga on the local hornets nest, I suppose that may count too!:)

Pigeon off the top of a grainery at 50yds with a 75gr HP at 3300fps out of a 257 Roberts. Bang - POOF
6' ball of feathers and not much else.
Labrador Dog was confused, he wanted to fetch something.

Er...

Nothing to brag about: my father always insisted on "you kill = you eat" so chickadee or gopher purée wasn't my plate of lentils.
But I did headshoot grouses with my little .177 Diana very often.

Didn't we already do this a few months back?
Anyway, my first "big gun" kill was a woodchuck at close range withh one of the family .577 Sniders and a newly opened package of ball ammo!!

Father was VERY angry!! ( 'specially since there were any number of varmint rifles on hand!)
This was the latest , with a different Snider, last fall while out with Hornhead and Buhda.
First one took out a branch behind him, then I got thee rangge right and put one in the crop.
No meat damage at all!:)

I always enjoyed gopher hunting with my 12 gauge, not because I wanted to but at the time, the site was a "primative" weapons range because it bordered a park. I could get several at a time with shot, but it wasn't nearly as fun as slugs. They really make a nice mess of those little vermin.

I've taken lots of grouse with the .45/70, works fine if you just get the head. I saw a buddy vaporize a grouse with a .340 Wby. Nothing really left to pick up there. I've made lots of light loads to shoot small animals with big bores, it works just fine. My buddy and I passed last Saturday shooting gophers with a pair of .58 T/C muzzleloaders. We got quite a few, made new homes for the ones we missed.

The first small game large caliber combo I ever saw was my dad shot a grouse with a 270 Weatherby mag @ about 30 yards. It just simply disappeared/evaporated before my eyes I couldn't even find a feather.

My first combo was a 375 H&H mag with 300gr Nosler Partitions and a wood chuck @ 125 yards. Blew it about 6' into the air....

I have also shot the head off of a ptarmigan @ 30 yards and a duck summersaulting into the air @ 200 yards with the same 270 Weatherby.

I have shot many gophers and other small critters with almost every larger caliber rifle I own. Actually to many to remember....

My last large rifle small game was last year.....

I shot a grouse @ 100 yards with my new 375 RUM and 260gr Nosler Accubonds @ 3020fps.

why?

blowing up a vArmint is one thing, but purposely shredding a tasty game bird is retarded...
