For those who think double rifles can't be accurate....

I took the Beretta Silver Sable 9.3x74R for a sight-in session before I use it to hunt whitetail deer next week. I'm pretty proud of it right now. Those are three sets of 2-shots, Under barrel fired first, over barrel fired second, no "crossing". 100 yd. target, Norma Oryx 285 gr. factory load. Rifle was hand held & resting fore end over front bag only, rear bag in photo was only for picture taking. I was moving the scope setting up 4 clicks between 2-shot groups until it was "just right". That's a 1" black square. I've never seen another double that can shoot this well. Miracles can happen! My two 9.3x62 bolt action rifles would have trouble competing with this level of accuracy. So far I can't seem to develop a handload that competes with the Norma factory load, but that's just a challenge, not a problem.

Excellent, and what a beautiful rifle! I was reading up on double rifles on the African Hunter forum yesterday, and it is interesting that o/u rifles don't get the same love as SxS rifles. The theory is that the British romanticized the idea of the SxS so it stuck.

Good suggestion Keith, I tried handloads with 63-65 gr. H4350 already, With both Norma Oryx and PPU bullets and have had only so-so results so far. I'm pretty sure I can come up with something for the Oryx bullets that will duplicate factory loads, but for now, the quest continues....

YET in Trap and Skeet shooting 99.9 % use a O+U you never see a SxS at the club 😊

Nice shooting... beautiful rifle. I have had a few rifles chambered for 9.3X74R... I enjoyed the cartridge and shot a good amount of game with it from Ruger No.1's... but they did not make the cut in my retirement downsizing... still a very useful cartridge.

I would love a side x side in 9.3x74r or 7x65r, ejectors, pivot scope mounts, 6x quality scope, nice wood etc you get the idea šŸ˜

A SxS doesn't need to open as far to reload. That gives the SxS a clear advantage over an OU for dangerous game situations.

OP that's a nice gun, and nice shooting to go with it. Certainly wouldn't feel under gunned around here with one of those!

This theory was debunked on the Africa Hunting forum by folks who own and have experience with both. I’ve only used SxS and O/U shotguns so I am just parroting what I read.

In what way was it debunked? The gun not having to open as far is a fact, so I'm assuming you are talking about debunking the idea it's faster to reload one vs the other or something?

The discussion is long and detailed and I certainly couldn’t do it justice in a few lines. My takeaway though is:

1. Difference in speed of reloading is a myth
2. O/U puts pressure on hinge mechanism when top barrel is fired as it is further from hinge
3. SxS torques the hinge because barrels are off center
4. O/U is easier to regulate

And some other stuff.

O/U vs SxS

Speed of loading

What these folks say makes sense to me.

Beautiful rifle!
Nice shooting!
Dibs should you ever decide to sell!

What power range is the S&B scope? (I have a Kahles 1.5-6x42 on my LH SAko 85 in 9.3x62, and a S&B 1.5-6x42 on my 376 Steyr)

And I would be happy to stick with the factory ammo with that performance...it is working well.
But then one would miss out on the fun and interest in finding that ultimate handload for that rifle. Best of luck in your quest!
