I got my meat bear on a remote powerline last tuesday. I took him with a barnes 185 grain TSX out of my Sako 338/08. It was a good hunt:) . The wind was sketchy and the bear was feeding in the open with no cover to stalk closer so I took a solid rest on a stump and ranged him at 287 yards. This is longer than I usually shoot for bears but I have plenty of practice with my rifle so I squeezed off a shot. I hit him solid through the vitals and he dropped on the spot. I know better so I chambered another round and sure enough the bear stood up! I squeezed off another shot and he dropped again but I could tell he was done. I waited about 15 minutes then hiked back to the ATV and gathered my gear to get to work. He was a decent bear at just under six feet with a nice brown hide. My wife and I had spent the last ten days hunting bear and we saw lots of nice bear but it seems the big boys are not out yet so I will save my second tag for the big one! The 338/08performed wonderfully and the Barnes bullet did the job.

To be honest the hides usually stay with the gut pile when I get a bear. I suppose when I shoot a monster I will get the hide done up but for the most part its a meat hunt for me.

SSHHH, We do have a spring bear hunt here. But instead of calling them spring bears, we call them nuisance bears. ;)
