So , next week I will go and get my new SR-22 .

For those of you who already own one , what is the best ammo (paper target shooting) AND I'm looking to get a scope that will be decent on different distances .

I am getting this rifle after months of reading about the options (seems to be a great choice for what I want in a non restriced) . Your comments have helped me in coming to this decision and I thought I could use your advice regarding the scope and ammo BEFORE I buy everything .

so what was the top three reasons for your decision ?

I've looked around also - and am leaning on a 10/22 action / tapco tactical trainer / TS X-Ring Barrel - for a few dollars more and better all round...
 
I have been trying different ammo over the last 4 weeks with a variety of 22 rimfires from levers to bolts and semi's.
I have not found a hollow point that will out perform a 40 grain solid yet.
Blazers and Winchester M-22,s are about the same but i have not done any better than Federal Champion 40gr. solids. They seem to be the most consistent ammo in the 6 rifles that I have tried.
 
Without a doubt CCI Stinger is the most accurate rounds in my SR-22, greats target group and you get tho have the power to kill clean gophers up 125 metres, those 2 are like bread and butter, take a look... JP.

In the short time I have had mine it has shot CCI stingers (32grain), CCI Mini mags (36 and 40 grain), Winchester 555 and 333 bulk from Walmart and CCI Blazers. Never had an issue with any. Probably 1000 rounds and no FFF or FTE from any round.
I have found that if you just want to have fun plinking then the cheap stuff work for that purpose. If you are looking for high accuracy over distance then maybe you may have to spend a little extra (not convinced yet), someone else will have to speak to that.

Mine came equipped (bought used) with an NcStar 2-7x32 tactical scope and I am satisfied with my limited use. I have read some poor reviews of NcStar optics in general so perhaps time will tell.

One thing you may notice right away is that this is much heavier than you may think, especially with all the add-ons. The accessories look good in pictures, but practically speaking many will be quickly disgarded to lighten the load. I will say however that I am growing accustom to the heft of the gun and like it more and more with each use.
 
I prefer CCI Mini Mags 40g RN over all others.

CCI 36HP are also good for hunting small game but I find that they are not that great or target shooting.

Just remember to follow the basic barrel break in so you don't gum up your barrel.
 
I like American Eagle 38gr hp. Sometimes I think I'm getting decent results with Federal bulk plated 36's, but at other times i think they are problematic. CCI mini mags are great, but more than I want to spend.

Well , first I wanted something with a tactical look . Also I was interested in spending under $800 . Although the m15 was loved by pretty much everyone who had one ....I gather it's restriced :redface: . I will leave my comments on the reasoning behind the absurdity of how those choices are made for some other time , suffice to say , that's the gun I would have bought had it been non restriced .
So I'm pretty much down to the mossberg or the ruger now .
Mossberg pros -inexpensive( about half the price of the ruger ) , light weight , and , forgive my love of aesthetics , REALLY cool looking .
Cons- lots of plastic , and VERY mixed reviews . No insult meant to those who love them but , although some people thought they were great , others who had purchased them said they were crap and were or had gone and gotten the ruger instead .
Takedown for cleaning sounds like a nightmare .
Ruger pros- although a little overpriced for what is essentially a 10/22 with nice looking clothes on , still affordable
The platform is tried and true
Reviews on the gun went from perfect to decent , not one person said it was a total POS
Cons-heavy
No sights out of the box ( frankly this is annoying to me , equal to a new car not coming with a steering wheel , you can drive it but your aim will suck )

So that pretty much led to my decision .

Thank you that is fantastic info ! I was just reading a thread by someone who had stripped his from constant tightening , and I understand that during stripping the top rail does NOT need to be unscrewed , so that will definitely be done prior to it's first trip to the range :D

Can I ask why you never commented on building a 10/22 ruger action with stock and barrel options to create something similar to the SR.....?

40 gr seems to be the overwhelming choice here ! As I know I'll be buying at least 2000 rounds ( I live a ways from a supplier ) , I think CCI gets the most votes . I am going to get some of the others suggested though because I want to try a variety for different distances and all .

I've got a lot to learn before I go that route, so I figured for my first rifle I'd want something pretty much out of the box ready .
I AM going to buy a different trigger assembly as many people agree that the stock one isn't great and that changing it will be a small project that greatly increases accuracy . I'm a big fan of not spending too much or doing to much and getting maximum results lol .
Someday in the future , once I have a good deal of time behind the trigger , I will be ready to build a project , but , as with all things , I think doing so now , with my limited knowledge , will cost more and yield less than optimum results , at least in my case .:confused:
Having said that , I have looked at many builds done on the ruger 10/22 in the last 6 months . They are VERY cool , total 22 #### , and I want most of them !
So , are you definitely going that route yourself ?
 
Well since you have experienced friends I think you are definitely in a better position to build than I am . I can imagine myself wasting a lot of $ getting things that I realize after the fact I don't like , you know ? I have no friends that are gun nutz , but if I did I would be able to make use of their knowledge , and shoot some of their guns before buying the add-ons .

Realistically I know I'll end up spending $1000+ just for the SR , scope , extra mags , trigger set up , etc . If I had the knowledge I could probably make something I liked better for that much . With your resources it sounds like building is the right path for you though .

Keeps me posted if you build as I will be learning from your experience:D !
 
I have a 10/22 with a Nomad kit on it... I wish id bought an SR22. The 10/22 I bought was the cheapest model... just basic. What I didnt realize is the majority of the trigger group is plastic. The gun shoots excellent and looks amazing with the nomad kit on it (my favourite looking .22 of anything out there) but its mostly plastic and that bugs me. Makes it feel like a toy. For just a few $$ more I could have had an SR-22 that feels like a real machine... all metal. IMO, well worth it. Just for reference, heres a pic of my nomad... I'm not disappointed in it at all... not one bit. But, if I had it to do over, id buy the SR-22... put a sight on it and NOTHING else... because nothing else would be needed.

My nomad kit went together impeccably. It fits tight, no gaps and no filing or dremel work required. Its very very solid and has an, overall, high quality feel to it. Most who pick it up assume its metal before they get their hands on it. Take down for a GOOD cleaning is a pain. But other than that, no complaints.

Simple solution, get both! Although I do gravitate towards my sr more.

Well I've had my pall and r-pal for a month now. Reason was to get and only get a hunting rifle. Picked up a weatherby vanguard series 2 in .270 win and a red field scope in 3x9.

Unfortunately the hunting rifle gets hot after a couple rounds and I was getting quite bored waiting for it to cool at the range.

I really wanted a s&w 15-22 but did not as I wanted non restricted! So I picked up a sr 22 local for 549 with the threaded barrel! I'm really having trouble finding a flash suppressor!

Anyways I bought a tAsco scope from cabelas that was quite poor in the end and turns out was defective! I turned it back in for a Simmons rimfire scope with a adjustable ao. Much prefer it in 3x9.

My top screws were loose and did not know until AFTER the scope was zeroed. I've tightened them up but have not lock righted them yet as I just got my tuffer buffer in.

The biggest problem with any scope on the sr22 is with height. With the tallest rings I could find it is just so damn uncomfortable looking into that scope. Just picked up a riser off eBay for 15.00 that raises it an inch and has mounting picatinnys on both sides.

Overall love the gun. Have not figured out best ammo yet. Federal seems to work way better than Winchester so far. But I just picked up 7 different small boxes to try out.

I don't think I'm bored with the sr22 yet...... But my s&w m&p 22 lr pistol showed up in mail Friday :). Want to use it pretty bad but Canada day long weekend got in the way!
 
Yes I do love those nomads , they look awesome !

Many people have said that one of their primary reasons for going with the sr22 is that it doesn't feel like a plastic toy , because ruger stayed with the metal parts . Some say they are too heavy though. When I used to shoot I never minded the heft of a gun that weighed 6-7 pounds , so I tend to lean towards that as a good thing .

Thanks for the reminder . Scope height has been mentioned by people on this forum before and I best add a riser to the list ! That's why I love this community ! Tips from you and others are going to save me time and hassle .

There are way too many choices in scopes :eek: but this info is definitely helpful in narrowing things down .

Sighting has SO many options ! I've always used open sights but, as I age I think I need to get into using scopes now . Still not sure what scope I'll be buying but I suspect I might have to try a few to get one I like .
