Foreign Gov'ts demanding trophies return

IIRC the US still has some items taken from the looting of York, UC in 1813.

Quite right, including the standard that flew over Government House. I believe it is prominently displayed at West Point.

With the anniversary it would be perfect time to demand its return. There's nothing like trying the shoe on the other foot.

As Smellie mentioned, the French were allowed to keep much of Napoleon's loot; the better to keep them quiet in future, and since everyone went to Paris anyway, it would be easier to see it all in one place!

Quite a number of years ago, the German govt asked the Russians if they would return the art works they had taken after the war.
The Russians reply, and I paraphrase, "No problem. You just bring back the millions of our people you killed and we will return your art."
I kind of liked that

The German's would have obliged but found it tough to discern them from the Millions Stalin did to his own. ;) ...when you live in a glass house, don't throw rocks.

The Louvres and British Museum are both full of stolen art and artifacts. If they had to return everything, all they would have to show is empty rooms.

Check out the basis of the collection at the Winnipeg Art Gallery some time.........

Yup. More loot.

Lt/Col Lipsett commanded 8th Batt early in the Great War, later commanded 2 Div.

Good soldier.

What was his nickname among the troops?

Why?

Perhaps a question of much of the Viscount Lord Gort Collection's origin would give the answer to the first part.

As to the second part, Lipsett was a brave Commander, and spent a lot of time in the front lines. His troops liked him for his treatment of them. However, there seemed to always be a few extra trucks around the Headquarters area full of "found" items. Anyone heard the phrase "Looting Louie?"
