I sort of agree with you but I often end up bringing rifles with detachable mags in the bush. What I do, just in case I lose a mag, is bring 2 or 3 extras with me. I also don't put them all in the same spot. 2 in the gun case with the rifle, 1 in my bag of cloths and another goes in the box with the dry foods or something like that. Same goes with boxes of spare ammo. So even if I lose a a mag or a box of ammo, I know for sure I have some some where else.

I know all that sounds a little redundant. But after spending months planning a trip, and hundreds of dollars getting set up and to my hunting spot, I'll take a little extra weight and redundancy over finding myself in the situation the OP is in any day. :yingyang: Anyway, good luck OP.
 
whenever I get a new rifle (to me) , I find the loads it likes the best that apply to the target species and once I find them, I bulk buy 250 to 500 rounds of that ammo.
means i'll pretty much never run out of hunting/sighting in ammo for that rifle.
Lock box in the camper has 1 box each of ammo for all the firearms I would take on my various hunting trips.
I also have a gear belt I wear on every hunt that has a flip open pouch that I load with 10 cartridges of the rifle I'm hunting with at the start of the hunt.
every rifle I hunt with (except .22 and .17hmr) have uncle mikes bullet sleeves on the buttstock, carrying 10 rounds for that rifle.
I buy the deluxe armoured waterproof soft rifle cases with the zipper pockets down each side, fitting up to 80 rounds in factory boxes , as well as essential tools and lubricants for that rifle.
I've never been in a hunting scenario where I have not got enough ammo in the camper or on the gear belt as a reserve if nothing else.

best advice I think no matter what caliber you choose, and because I happen to love the #### out of the .338fed hahaha , take my advice, find the load your rifle likes and buy 500 rounds and always store 10 or 20 in your day pack or in another hunting item container that you would never leave home without.

funny story, the friend I brought along on my moose hunt last week forgot his bolt at home. He was okay with it, he's 70, and rather enjoyed just hangin in camp by the fire.
he brought lots of ammo tho LOLZ

I have seen enough difference between loads by the same manufacturer, and the same bullet weight, that I would not be comfortable substituting one load for the other without sighting in again . One of my rifles had a variance of 3" at 100 yards when switching from Ballistic Tips to Partitions of the same weight.
 
Buy one of these, problem solved, whether you shoot a 30-06 or 458 Lott. The ammo stays with the gun.

I remember 15 years ago the 300WSM was introduced everyone said "don't forget your ammo! Stock up on brass!" etc etc. It was only a few years later that 300WSM ammo was everywhere, even Canadian Tire.

My response was the same then as now -Common cartridge or wildcat.....Don't forget your ammo! Laugh2
 
The last 20 years I've hunted with oddball and wildcat cartridges and never had an issue. Use a checklist and take 50 rounds of ammo for each rifle. I've hunted north of the artic circle with a 338-06, Texas with a 6.5/300 WSM northern BC with 405 Winchester ect... do a little planning.

Not saying one load for the other, saying basic blue box Federal 130gr .270 as the OP requested.;) He has the right gun and load to forget your ammo for. Practically any town has that load.

I don't see blue box in his posts, I only see 130gr federal. As far as I know, Federal offers several 130gr loads for the 270win.

I agree, and I can't forget my ammo. If I do I'm in big trouble, my main rifle's are chambered in 284win, 7mm-wsm and 308 norma. The last couple of years though I got a 270win. I also agree with SJ, have a check list, you can add things that you need each year or delete stuff you don't need.

A few years back my hunting partner brought his prev years hunting license that had expired and left his current license at home. What a pain in the arse that was. Lucky for us he noticed it when we first arrived at the area we were going to hunt. A trip from Greenwood to Grande Forks and he was able to get another one. chit happens.

I've had a client whose ammo didn't arrive with his gun at the airport, fortunately he shot a .300 win. That made ammo the least of the worries, the gear that was with the ammo was the concern. If you hunt driving distance from home, you could use a 6mm Lee Navy or .400 H&H if desired. If you travel by air, cross borders whether provincial or international, and then ride boats, bushplanes, or land cruisers a chambering you can resupply without a second thought locally is smart business. I have lots of oddballs, .257 Bob, 7x57, .375 Flanged... they just don't travel out of my sphere much.
