Form 6 NIA and LGR

I called the ATF today and discussed the end of the LG registry with them.

They were skeptical to believe it was actually happening, but I think I had the girl convinced.

In any light, she said until the senior management take care of this, they still expect the numbers on the form. I asked if this was the case even if the numbers weren't valid, to which she replied "Those numbers need to be there".

She confirmed that the old registration numbers could still be used, but I can see problems with that when the form is validated.


Might be best to hold off for a little while on renewing your forms. I'd expect the ATF will clarify this matter in due course.

I'm actually sending in a renewal form today.

I'll resend once they get up to speed with the LGR being gone.

Hopefully by then I'll have more toys to put on the form 6!!!

That box is for Canadians... What do you think they require for any other people bringing in Firearms....?

I've got 2 form 6NIA's back and authorized for a match in Wyoming in June, since they list certificate numbers I'm keeping my old certificates to ensure there are no hickups at US Customs. Plus when I come back through Canadian customs they are proof that my firearms originally came from Canada, even if the LGR is gone.

Just stop off at Canada Customs or whatever it is called these days (Edit: CBSA) before going into the US. There is a form you can fill out listing items that you are taking down to the US (ie: camera, computers, firearms, etc). Provides proof when you return to Canada with said goods.

There is no registry to check the serial numbers when returning from the US.

The registry never proved that the gun was ever legally imported to Canada or legally belonged in Canada. US Citizens were able to get a PAL and register their firearms to simplify the process of temporarily importing their guns.

dealers do not even know all about what we are required to do yet; I wouldn't expect the ATF to be up to speed. This only happened yesterday.

This is a lot of worry over little...
As far as the US is concerned... Make, model, OAL, barrel length ser. no. Is what I bet they'll eventually settle for... I mean batf just needs to identify what you're bringing in.
As far as CBSA is concerned... Your NR's will be just like any other expensive item you might take out of the country and not want a hassle over when you come back. Get on of them there forms before you leave that IDs the item as your prior to exiting Canada...

You are right in your statement in that a few people found that out while returning overseas with firearms.

Shouldn't matter as they are checked when you cros the border both ways against the Form 6 in my experience.

I do not have any direct experience but I do know of people who were waved through after presenting their documents on the US side. So, how do you prove to CBSA you are not importing firearms into Canada? Do you use that poor quality return fax (Form 6-NIA) from ATF as proof?
