Hi again

Can somebody post some info on the easiest way of obtaining a form 6N1A. I had one a few years ago but since have let it lapse. I want to shoot in Tonawanda this summer and want to get the ball rolling.

thx

but did you have an invite to a match and what did you put down for ammo If there reloads

No hunting lic. required
No match invitation required to apply for F6NIA.

Good idea to have an invitation /flyer to show USBP as support for your stated reason for entering the US.

Reloads..

YOUR name and address under "manufacturer" then fill in the rest ( cal. , type, quantity)

I didn't think I needed a license but I heard Pat say on ASR podcast that he buys a license for Alaska?

For ammo just put hand loaded. That's what I put back when I had one.

Go to WNYPPL and download and print the invitation for their matches. It is for Canadians.

The wife and I just got back from shooting a match in Phoenix, when I applied for my 6NIA the form on line is still asking for an invitation, even if Washington doesn't. Crossing the border they asked and were shown my invitation. What Washington says obviously doesn't reflect what happens at various border crossings.

"getting" the Form 6NIA issued does NOT require either a hunting license, nor a match invite (despite what it says on the Form): provided you are a member of USPSA (perhaps being a member of IPSC is sufficient: I do not know). In my application, I include commentary that I am a USPSA member and require the Form 6NIA to attend multiple matches throughout the year.

However, for CROSSING THE BORDER, you WILL require a match invite (at least in the western half of Canada, this is the case). Right or wrong, these are the instructions the border guards are working under. I discussed this with one of them. As they were reviewing my documents (including the match invite), I commented that I had heard that the match invite was no longer required when crossing the border. The response was that their marching orders were that they are still required.

Therefore I never cross the border without one. My typical methodology is: if there isn't one immediately available from the match organizers: create one for them: email it to them: advise them that they're welcome to use it for others, but that I require one to cross the border. I have always had favorable responses to this.

Like any border crossing to any Country, the Border Patrol can turn you back for any reason they want. Having additional documentation to prove that you are going to do, what you say you are going to do is always prudent! I always have a match invite to support my stated intent for entry into the USA!

Does anyone know...was the hunting license/invitation requirement removed because Canadians do not actually need these things to possess firearms while on US soil?

I know full well it is no longer required for crossing the boarder...but the form 6 doesn't enable possession of a firearm while on US soil...my understanding is that it is the hunting license or invitation that does.

Yes... the F6NIA is just a Federal permit for temp. importation of firearms/ammo.
We're supposed to be aware of all state and local laws that may preclude us dirty foreigners from possessing guns in a certain jurisdiction...
For our purposes where we're shooting competitions I dont think we need to worry about all the various little rules.
As long as our guns are cased "off range" I'm good with US Code 926A.

I was told that it is no longer a requirement because we, as Canadian's, don't require a VISA to enter the United States.

I thought it was because technically canadians are not non-immigrant aliens...but that could easily be connected to the VISA requirements.

I remember reading this in its entirely and wondering if it actually enables Canadians to buy firearms in the US. In any event this was the conclusion in regards to the Form 6 NIA. Interestingly enough, NIAs who do not require a VISA actually technically should not require a Form 6 at all....but the ATF wanting to keep this application in place for other reasons.

Nonimmigrant aliens lawfully admitted to the United States without a visa, pursuant either to the Visa Waiver Program or other exemptions from visa requirements, will not be prohibited from shipping, transporting, receiving, or possessing firearms or ammunition, and the regulations will also no longer proscribe the sale or other disposition of firearms or ammunition to such nonimmigrant aliens.

Download Form 6NIA - https://www.atf.gov/files/forms/download/atf-f-5330-3d.pdf

If you need a visa to get into the US, then you need an invite, if no visa required, then send it in.

You now have the form 6NIA, because you're in ON, you send a copy of the Form to the CPFO requesting an ATT to the border - list the border points.

You now have Form 6NIA and the ATT, you now need a personal invitation to the match before you can bring the guns into the US - everytime.

I do this 12 - 14 times a year, and have just returned today from a match last Saturday.

FYI - you can purchase ammo with the Form but you cannot export it without the proper paperwork. You would be breaking US laws.

When you buy the hunting license it's important to know when the hunting license is valid from and until.

For example, the Alaska small game license runs like the calendar year, but the North Dakota starts around like April or something. So if you want to get the form 6 off and approved in time for summer, then the Alaska hunting licence is a better way to go because you can submit the application early January.

If you were to buy the North Dakota license this time of year, the form 6 may very well have expired by the time you get the form 6 because the hunting season is over.

Bottom line is that you want to be mindful to buy the hunting license at the beginning of the hunting fiscal year and then apply for the form 6 so you don't get cut short on the period the form 6 is valid.

An important point is the people who sell the licenses are not about to inform you if you buy it a week before the license expires, so you better know to ask.

They got me once, but it wont happen again.
