This thread gave me an idea. Strangeday mentioned the lack of 5.7x28mm ammunition and I thought of something - I looked at some pictures of 5.7x28mm cases on the web, and I thanks to another CGN'er I've got a few spent IVI 5.56x45mm cases sitting around in my room. Inspired I looked up the case dimensions and I thought of something.

From my observations -

The rim of the .223 Remington is slightly fatter, and the cartridge case is somewhat fatter as well but they are pretty similar.

So, I've been wondering if it'd be possible to form 5.7x28mm cartridge cases out of .223 Remington cartridge cases. Granted it'd be a lot of work: first we'd need to trim down the rims to, .309." I'm pretty sure that'd be the easy part, could do it on a lathe. Trimming would be the easy part, but getting the cases to slim down to .309" and then re-necking down would require a series of dies, and the only place I know to get custom dies would probably be RCBS or Lyman, but I'm pretty sure they could do it.

After that I'm pretty sure it'd be downhill from there - anneal, deburr, resize, reprime, reload, ready.

But assuming it would be possible to get the resizing dies, would this project be feasible?

Or would it just be easier (or cheaper) to buy ready-rolled brass or cartridges?

How about bringing a rake and shovel to your club just after the cops finish playing with their full auto FN-P90's
Unfortunately, SRC only allows single-shot .22LR rifles. We aren't allowed to use repeater-style actions because we don't have those little 'stalls' like at the other clubs or outdoor ranges. But I might snoop around. There is a police station five minutes away, I can ask around there if they have any spare brass I can lap up. I believe they use 9mm ammunition instead, though, for their duty side arms.

It's too bad if the case head is not the same... oh well. I guess that put an end to this project. :D

I once made a full length section of a 5.7x28mm FN cartridge. The case head of the 5.7 is a full 50% thicker than the .223. I did a "report" for fun on the physical construction of the cartridge, anyone that wants a copy may IM me their email address, and I will send it along. Be forewarned, digital photo technology back then was not what it is today, and the photos are crap. Also, some of the technical speculation I made has been revealed, with time, to not be true, so don't take too many of my guesses seriously.
