At the end of the day, fast aircraft using water cooled engines just weren't very good at CAS ... The A-1 was slow, it could get in low where the action is, could stay on station for a very long time, had decent payload and could take a ridiculous amount of damage and still come home. The P38 was a good aircraft, speed was it's strong point, survivability .... Not so much ....

Actually, the Douglas A-1 Skyraider is the grandfather of the A-10.
