Down in the states on holidays and came across 1000rds in a surplus store. Am I allowed to purchases this ammo and drive it across the border? It works out to be about 42 cents a round. Cannot find anything definate what you can bring across and how much.

the quick answer is NO!!!
canada customs might not care and just charge duty/taxes.
however,if you get pulled over in the U.S. and they find the ammo on you,
say hello to jail time and losing your vehicle.

However the slightly less quick answer is that you can, per Canadian law, bring it across. Canada Customs won't care, not "might not". The problem is the US. You aren't supposed to buy it here as a non-resident, non-citizen. Many gun shops near the border won't sell you ammo if you show up with BC plates, even if you have the legal right to buy. They just don't want the hassle. I have even had occasional hassle when visiting shops with my buddy from Canada and riding in his car and I am an American.
