I never expected to see a box again but there they were at the Sundridge gun show. They were in .357 so no use to me but i still had the urge to pick them up.
I know they are really nothing special just silver and black but still, who doesn't want some Talons?

Wasnt there a reason why Winchester quit making them......Something about cop killer bullets.I remember there was media hype about these, but I can not remember what!!

P.S....I gots a box of 9mm...hehehe

Story I heard was that "Black Talons" fragmented into sharp pieces when hitting bone.
Doctors operating on the patient would get punctured through their latex gloves and skin,
leaving themselves open to getting infected with the AIDS virus.

The anti's just didn't like the look of them or the name and started a #### storm in the press calling them "cop killers"

So, winchester voluntarily pulled them from the market.

But Winchester got the last laugh as shortly after that, the released a new line of ammo called Winchester Ranger SXT.

The SXT was widely known to refer to the ammo being the Same eXact Thing as the Black Talons. The first few runs of the SXT even still had the black bullet.

A few years ago I picked up a couple boxes of 40 S&W at the Thunder Bay gunshow for $15 each. It was Winchester Ranger law enforcement ammo, loaded with 180gr talons, silver case with plain copper hollow points. Shot most at the range. I just picked them up because $15 for a box of 50 40cal was a good deal. Still have a 1/2 box left.

SXT is the same thing. Just not a scary "black" bullet.

Not true. My box of 9mm SXT has the Black bullet. They are just left over Black Talons that Winchester packaged in the SXT boxes. When that supply ran out, they discontinued the Black bullet. They are out there. Just hard to find.

All this talk of ###y black made me pick up the one and only lonely box of .40 Winchester SXT; in a Ranger law enforcement ammo box, at my local pusher today. It has the black bullet. I have a few boxes of rifle ammo with black talon bullets, but this is the first box of pistol ammo I have with it. And, the irony is, it will probably still be in the stash when I croak.

The current Winchester branding for what used to be Black Talons is the Winchester Ranger T series of ammo. No lubalox coating on the bullets but in reality they are the same thing. It would still be kinda nice to have a box of black talons just for the novelty.
