Hello fellow gunnutz! I was out hunting the other day and stopped at a little tiny town that had a little small Mobile trailer grocery store that also sold hunting licenses. I was going to pick up my supplemental Whitetail doe tags.

After purchasing my tags the fellow behind the counter mentioned that he sells guns as well. He took us to the end of the trailer and showed us a nice collection of rifles for sale. He pulled out this Browning B78 in 22-250 Remington, and it was gorgeous! I looked it over closely, and the bore looked in very clean condition. The rifle had a presentation case, and a 24 power BSA platinum scope on it (not the best match, but fine). We haggled on our selling agreement, and I went home with the rifle! A great deal to boot!
So I Thought I would share some pictures with you guys.

Upon getting home, I cleaned the bore and inspected the rifling even closer. The bore looked nearly new! BONUS! I remounted a Leupold 4-12 VXII to do some load development (it is a known and proven scope).

This is the first group at 100 yards while fire forming cases. Very happy with this start! All the load information is labeled on the target, if anyone is interested.

Hope you enjoyed the post.

1899: I had one of these rifles and sold it back in the early 80's, but with the octagon barrel. I had kicked myself ever since! It was such a refreshing find!

Yes, mine was octagon barrel too - sorry for the hijack.

A 78 in 6mm with the octagonal barrel was the first gun I ever bought. I was 10, saw it on the consignment rack in Klondike arms. I had $395 in my bank account, so the shop keep called the owner with my much lower than asking price offer.

"There is a kid here who wants to offer you $395".
The owner replied "how old is he?"
"10" said the shop keep.
"sell it to him," replied the owner.

And I had my first rifle. :) like a jack ass I traded it on a abolt a few years later.

I am playing with the idea of looking for another of these rifles in a big game hunting caliber (6mm Rem, 270,Win, 280rem, 308, 30-06). It would be nice to have one in 7-08 rem, but that would be a custom job.

Have any of you gun nuts heard of anyone who rebarrels these rifles?

Another hijack ....

I still have my Browning 1885 in 270 with 26" octagonal barrel. It is the most accurate rifle I own. The shiny Browning epoxy-type finish was stripped and the wood redone with a dozen coats of hand-rubbed oil. (same rifle as the B78 with different trigger design - note the second trigger group pin as compared to the B78)

Best story ever on CGN.
Unfortunately not a happy ending.
