I've just added the correct APX L806 scope to the MAS 49. It's a nice piece of kit…

I got up very early this morning and drove to the Woodstock show. A few minutes after the doors opened at 07:30 I spotted two MAS rifles sitting side by side. One was a simple MAS 36, but the other was a MAS 49. Not a 49/56, but a straight MAS 1949. It's in all original condition, and still has its as-issued leather sling. There's been a space on my wall for one of these for some time, so I'm very pleased to have finally filled it.

I don't have time to photograph the rifle right now, but it's almost identical to this one...

I calculated from the open source lists and query tools for the old registry, that there are between 40 and 50 MAS 49s in Canada. Good catch!

The French get a bum rap in English-speaking culture for their military history, but their rifles do not look anything like those designed by losers. The MAS 36 is the most efficient firearm I've seen. Not a wasted gram of steel in the design. The MAS semi automatic series (1940, 1944, 1949 and 1949/56) is a spiral of fixing problems that plague every technical advance. So, rather than wait for perfection, the designers accepted a 95% solution on various components and fixed them on the next design. Good and smart.

I know not everyone is fan of MAS rifles, but I think they're outstanding pieces of engineering. They're strong, well built, an very accurate. The 36 is a great rifle, and if it had been produced in large numbers earlier it might have helped to slow the German invasion of France in World War Two...

As I've never seen another MAS 49 before it's impossible to put a market price on them. One thing's for sure… I won't be selling mine!
