Found a new Marlin Papoose!

Well after looking for a new Marlin Papoose, I was able to score one at the LGS. I bought a new one last Fall but I ended returning it because the front site was canted. I was able to pick through 4 Papooses today and 2 of the other ones had noticeably canted sites. This one was straight so I took her. I don't know what is up with Marlin's QC but I was pretty unimpressed with the site situation (out of 5 that I handled 3 had very noticeable cants with 2 having reasonably straight sites). Anyone else notice this issue with the Marlins? I just hope this rifle is a shooter - the rifling looks sharp and everything else looks good. I will strip her down tonight and lube her up.

 
They're sweet guns... Strange foot note. I remember back in the day I was working on northern vancouver island. Our crane operator used to carry one in his walk on baggage out of south terminal in van when flying to port hardy! Lol. Pre 9-11
 
No experience with the Papoose as it stands, but have heard numerous complaints about Marlin quality control sinking in the toilet since Remington bought them out in '07. Between my Remington 870 and my Marlin 336c, though my experiences with both have been "meh", I don't see myself opening my wallet to either company, or their subsidiaries any time soon.

Sad, because I love Barnes... :(

The canted sight issue seems to be pervasive on many Marlin products, not just the Papoose.
 
Yeah, I was pretty unimpressed with what I was seeing but as I really want a papoose - I decided to bite the bullet. The rifling looks good and sharp so hopefully this is the only issue I have with the rifle. In the late 80s/early 90s Rugers were just plain awful but they have come back and having owned a number of the new Rugers I would gladly recommend them to anybody sometimes you just have to ride out the bad periods. A lot of folks are blaming Remington's management but I think ppl are being oblivious to the fact that the company was not too healthy if it was bought out by Remington and likely their QC was already in the toilet...
 
LGS = Local Gun Store. Papooses are pretty difficult to find - it took me a while to find one that I was willing to drop the moola on. Most guys who have one don't want to sell them and the ones that tend to be for sale are either pretty well used or not the model I am looking for (Stainless).
 
I had a north haven one and it was a super good shooter. The engineering is there, if it's put together properly it should be a great little gun for you. I had a small 4x bushnell shotgun scope on mine, fit nicely in the case with it mounted.
 
I love my Papoose and it's a shooter for sure. The micro-groove rifling really does its job well. I didn't bother with scoping mine since I'd always be worried about losing zero every time I took off the barrel.
 
Also just bought a new Papoose at Wholesale Sports which is canted. Great shooter though. Otherwise a great little gun. Have put about 300 rounds through it so far and never had any FTF with 4 different ammos even some of the Truncated cone shaped stuff. Just gobbles everything up. Reason for the canting is that the bushing that the barrel screws on to is over tightened just a wee bit and then pinned, so you can't do anything about it. I phone Marlin USA and they put me onto Gravel in Quebec City for repairs. No thanks. Don't want to wait for it. I just cant the rifle a tiny bit to the right to aim. No problem. Great for carrying on the Dualsport motorcycle and perfectly legal. No one even knows you're carrying a rifle.

I put a 3.5x Vomz scope on mine, fits nice in the case, holds zero between barrel removals.

Shoots better groups than my 10/22, which seems to just keep moving further back to the dustiest corner of my cabinet.

The Papoose is one of the guns (like the 10/22) that was unobtanium up here during the gun panic south of the border, but now are getting to be easier and easier to find. NoSale Sports in Calgary has had them in stock for a couple months now.
 
A micro-groove bbl bolt action Marlin was one of my first rimfire rifles purchased. More expensive .22's have come and gone it's a keeper because it is so accurate.
Sucks about the irons being off…. I'd mount a micro red dot and enjoy the Papoose.
 
Super Tenere: I don't know about your particular Papoose but the ones I saw at the LGS had the dovetail and screw holes for the sites improperly cut/drilled. There was no way to fix them short of getting a new barrel with the dovetail and screw holes properly installed. It blows me away that Marlin would let these out of the factory as they are not slight cants but very noticeable to the eye. They may work alright but it will definitely impact how you sight your rifle in. The front beat is supposed to adjust windage only but the ones I saw would have resulted in impact shifts of down and left (if you moved the front bead left) and up and right (if you moved the front bead right). Not my cup of tea... I am just glad that the one I got has properly installed sights. I did notice that the fibre optic on mine had flash still on it which was causing the bead to be a bit off within the dovetail so I removed the flash and now it is bang on.

ProMag. They're going to the range tomorrow. The Papoose itself, as configured, has several trips to the range and 400-500 rounds through it, and I'm just tickled pink by how well it shoots, so I'm starting to throw more $$ into rounding it out.

Got the mags 3 for $99, so I hope they work out Ok, the reviews are somewhat mixed, but overall positive for the ProMags, so I decided to take the risk. Will circle back on this thread once I've had them out and dumped them a couple of times.

Also picked up a plain-jane 795 last night. Have never been happy with the accuracy (non-existent) of my 10/22, but want a decent shooting semi-auto .22. Not sure if I'll have a chance to give it a pre-shoot cleaning before tomorrow, so dunno if that one will go with me.
 
I look forward to your report on the pro-mags as I wouldn't mind a few hi-caps for the marlin. I like 10/22s but I wanted a nice portable truck gun that folds away discretely - I have heard a lot of good stuff about the papoose so I decided to get one. The manual states favored ammunition and mentions not to use hyper-velocity ammo. I want to use Velocitors in mine because of its impressive terminal effects think it will be an issue?
 
You can use any ammo in your Papoose, no worries. My problem is not the sights but the bushing being tightened too much. If you look at it without the barrel on, you can see the flat spot is not exactly in center/bottom but just a tiny bit off. So by simply canting the rifle a tiny bit to the right while aiming I get a good sight picture and good accuracy.
 
Good to hear your rifle is just a bit off and that sights are straight. Mine looks to be build correctly so I can't wait to shoot her. I packed up some Velocitors and we shall see how she groups...

I've never used Velocitors, but I do use their dag nasty evil twin brothers, the hyper-velocity segmented hollow points - a frangible .22 that runs at the same 1640fps velocity rating. Unobtanium right now, along with a lot of the other CCI ammo, and I'm down to my last 1500 or so rounds of it.

My experience with the hyper-velocity ammo is that it likes a long barreled .22, or the accuracy isn't worth a dang. It's a tack driver in my CZ 452 Lux, my uncle's Matchmaster 513T (one of the greatest 22 rifles ever made, and my cousin had better treat his dad right, otherwise I'll scoop that piece of inheritance out from under him when the time comes, hopefully still a couple decades away), but it patterns more than groups with all my my carbine length 22s and shortie 22s.

Not worried about it beating up the action, though, I've run it through a couple different semi-autos, and yah, the brass comes flying out the side at the same speed as the lead out the front, but nothing has jammed up.
 
There have been several cases of Marlin rifles with broken internals because they were fed hyper-velocity ammo. You can probably get away with it a few times, but eventually it will probably catch up with you.

I believe that... I've only tried it a couple of times in different semi-auto .22s, and the accuracy was pretty much non-existent so I didn't bother beyond that.

As I mentioned, from my experience, the hyper velocity rounds seem to need a long barrelled bolt action to get decent accuracy. And I don't get much joy from shooting and missing, so...

p.s. Actually, I'll save myself some time filming any results I get from the ProMag 795 mags, I'll just note if I get any different results:


Thanks for posting that vid, by the way mmatt, it was part of the reason I took a chance on picking up the mags at all. Straightforward, to the point, just shoot the darn things and see if they work.
