Hey guys,

Here is a new project. Not my first project, but the first time I am documenting it. Check it out and please let me know what you think. For some of you traditionalists out there this may be too much for you to handle.

VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED!

After removing the old finish and sanding with 280 grit sand paper This is the first coat of Tung Oil. I think this is going to turn out way better than I thought

Beautiful stock, great job. I sanded one of my sks stocks too, I then stained the stock a very dark walnut. Do you feel a difference in weight too after all the sanding?

Geez the grain in that stock is almost identical to mine, color too only I used stain.
Very nice job, she's gonna be a bute when done. Post some pics when you get her together. I hope she shoots as good as she's gonna look.

This is after 10 coats of tung oil. Gently buffing with superfine steel wool and letting cure for 24 hours between coats. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at how well this 65 year old piece of wood turned out.

Did the same, grain looks great like yours. :)

Nice job!

I converted it to detachable mags, installed a brake, buttstock rubber pad to increase the LOP. and a bipod as it's easier to shoot when on our bench or ground.

I used Tru Oil also waxed it.

Tung oil is good but Tru Oil I felt has a nicer finish and is easier to use, but your stock looks great.

My kids refused to shoot the SKS when I got it, they said it stunk too much. :)

Son and I also refinished a Model 310 that my Dad gave me in the 70s. :) Got a little higher sheen on this one.

I used Varathane "Diamond coat" on my last project and was so let down by the finish, that I swore not to use polymers again. Going to re-refinish that one with Tung oil as well.
Thought about using Tru oil but it contains tons of solvents and polymers, wanted to do a real rubbed oil finish. Done french polish before but I have found it to be to glossy and delicate for a field gun.
Here are a few pics of the last project that I plan on redoing.

That is the way diamond coat is supposed to come out, dull flat finish. It's not a good choice for a stock.

Heres mine with 4 coats of Clear Gloss Minwax Polyurethane. Another 2 or 3 coats and she'll be like glass
This was what she looked like when I bought her
