Guys I found some reasonable priced Cast projies for .375, Flat nose or Round Nose!

I have the option an suppose I will go FN, the Gr is 245gr Coated Hard Cast.

Can you tell me how to approach loading for this type of Round? I havnt loaded for Cast ever before..

Thanks a lot! I look forward to this.. a new approach to Sambar hunting, open sighted and CAST!

Coated? I'm guessing powder coated?

From what I've read it's good for well over normal cast speeds but you still don't want to push it out to jacketed speeds. So look for load recipes that are around 1700 to 1800 fps that are normally good with gas check cast bullets.

If the rifle is a tube magazine fed lever rifle then you want the flat nose bullets. Normally these are used in the old big bore lever action rifles in .38-55. The purpose of the flat nose being to rest flat against the next round's primer instead of presenting a firing pin like pointed nose. Nothing ruins your day like a bunch of rounds in a tube magazine going off when you're hand is wrapped around it. So flat nose for tubular magazines and either one according to choice for everything else.

For loading data anything you find for cast lead will work. And of course any plain cast or gas checked cast data you find for the close cousin .38-55 will certainly work just fine since it runs with a far lower peak pressure. Your cases are a hair shorter but there's LOTS of leeway for safety for you to be able to use .38-55 data. Whatever you see in the .38-55 data for peak pressures will be raised by maybe 10% due to your slightly smaller case volume of the .375Win cases. But you'd still be literally thousands of PSI or CUP below the maximum pressure for jacketed .375Win loads so you'd have nothing to worry about as far as your rifle goes for safety of operation.

Both .375Win and .38-55 are not all that popular. But while still lean you'll find a LOT more cast loading data for .38-55 than you will for .375Win. With the powder coated bullets you can safely explore the top end of the cast and gas checked .38-55 loadings without needing to worry about bore leading.

I hope that helps. Good luck and good hunting.

Thanks mate that helps!

I currently only run the rifle at 1800-1900 with jacket bullets! so sounds like I can use a similar load in the Cast an also test it out before I take it to game!

thanks for the response!

Mate I found they are not powder Coated, its a Dry lube coat or something?

I ended up with Copper coated ones for $63 per 250, an extra $20 for freight :) sooo $80 for 250 projies!

should have them in 7 days or so!

Mate, I wish you wouldn't use that horrible contraption of letters, "Boolits."
I usually never look at a thread with that in it.

Yeah generally don't use it myself, but figured it fit the Cast bullet theme from the interweb.

theres a website about these projies,

thoughts on how to use em :) im looking at sambar! got to find Data on the heavier scale. thinking around 28gr of AR2207

What special needs does the 94 now need if throwing Cast copper coated stuff?

Casting your own bullets isn't all that difficult, or expensive, even I can do it. Even if it only saves you a little money, you can vary the alloy to get better performance on game and/or better accuracy. Depending on what a sambar is, you could well be better off with a softer alloy like 20:1 lead and tin. Hard cast can be all right, but its benefits are often wildly exaggerated.

Then you'd be missing out on a great resource over at the Cast Boolits forum.

Besides, is it any worse than reading through Kamlooky's posts? :d

Ok so Fellas.

next week aught to have these projectiles I try out.

im looking for loads or advice on a recommended speed to send these Cast, 'copperhawk' (dry coated) projectiles at.

an my manual is only showing loads for up to 220gr, so unsure how much to lower the charge for the heavier 245gr?

But for now if some gurus can rec a speed for hunting , would be great and also the issues I may be faced with, after a few shots do I look down the tube to make sure its not fouling? etc

thank you

WL, I have a modern reproduction M94 in 38-55. I shoot a bit of cast in it with great success.
I have 3 different cast bullets, but all measure at least .002" larger in diameter than the groove diameter of my rifle.

Your 375 is a true .375" groove diameter, so you will use slightly smaller diameter bullets in it than I do in mine. [.3765" groove]

I drive these bullets between 1650 and 1800 [they weigh 240 grains, 255 grains and 285 grains. the latter is gas checked]

I use H322, IMR 3031, Norma 200 or Some old stock of Reloder 12. I actually like H322 the best, at around 30 grains, but start lower.

I have never had a hint of leading in my barrel with any of these recipes, and particularly the 285 grain GC is very accurate. All shoot plenty
well for a levergun with aperture sights. (<2moa @ 100Meters.)

FWIW, the 285 cast and the 255 Jacketed Barnes for the 38-55 [.277" diameter] will occasionally put 3 into 1" at 100M.

Enjoy your 375 Winchester....it will be a "fun" gun, and takes game out to 200 or so with authority.

Regards, Dave.

Just a side note: I shot my biggest Whitetail deer to date with my 38-55. :)

Hi Dave,
I appreciate that reply a lot mate, thanks!

Ill take a few notes from your post when im done this reply,

Sounds like you know how the 3855/375 rolls!
I do to a degree, owned for a few years now an used factory for a while but went reloaded for it an ended up with a jacketed 220gr load at 1800fps! ive shot sambar deer whilst stalking and find it is a hammer, although maybe with the "38" speeds and the Jacketed Hornadys it is more a pencil penetrator.. I rekon with Cast I will have better energy dump on the critter!

I also use 28gr of 2207, which is a few gr below rec . bottom line factory shot ridiculously high with the standard sight so I pissed them off got a willliams and reloaded. wolahh.. accurate.

H4198 Reloader 7 IMR4198 W680 Tu 2000 N200 N130 are powders Equivilents to AR2207. obviously charge weight would differ but it is in line with you Mention of Norma 200.... at which charge would You suggest I start?

The REC MIN for 2207 & 220gr is 31 2000fps and 34 for 2200fps... So my 28gr Charge est with barrel length loss is around 1700fps..

Thanks again fella!
