It looks like a rearsight base for a 96 mauser with the tangent plate cut off & speed holes added. Cutting off the tangent was not enough of a weight saving

It is possible as they could well fit and do the job.

Somewhere far, far, far in the back of my mind is the image of a front site hood with these slits, which IIRC was on a sportered milsurp. Longish as well. I want to say from the late 50s early 60s era. Just my senile guess.
