I am trying to figure out which scout base I can have drilled and tapped onto an old m 96/38 action. This is an old action I have located, already de-blued, muzzle threads cut off, rear sight assembly removed and pitting on the barrel. I figure this is the perfect candidate to make my dream scout from. I am thinking of a 20 in. barrel, recrown, boyds stock, timney trigger and a Leupold Scout scope. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Notice, this was a bag of sporterized parts I bought from the 1980,s. I did not destroy a milsurp, I finished someones old project! I also decided to make this a sporting rifle and not a scout set up.

Worth maybe $100. I paid $125 for a good m/96 that was complete and matching except bolt had been cut and welded, and it was drilled and tapped with weaver bases attached, at the Winnipeg Gun Show last week-end. You can buy so pretty good sporters from Trade-Ex in the $200-$250 range.

Xs makes a pretty nice scout mount. It's not a drill and tap, well I guess it could be. But they suggest an epoxy. Nothing but good reviews.

I could order a sporter from Tradex but building my own scout will be so much more fun. When I get this action I'll post pictures of my progress.

Came home with a bag of parts and a barreled action. After I started cleaning 20 odd years of surface rust and dusty oil my jaw dropped. Basically all I have to do is drill & tap and blueing. I've already ordered a stock.

Looks like you have the makings of a great Sporter project there. The magazine floor plate has been modified to hinge it, a low swing safety added, the bolt handle modified, and it you check, it seems to be drilled an tapped for a receiver sight on the right side of the receiver bridge. The barrel has been cut and crowned, and the extra trigger has had a screw tapped into it for adjustment. That flat bolt handle almost cries out for a full stock carbine, similar to the sporting Mannlichers. The thumb piece on the end of the cocking piece can be cut down a bit to make it a bit more streamlined, without harming the dependability of the action. Look at the Swedish CG-63 target rifles, and you will see that they have about 3/8 inch cut off the end of the striker and you will see what I mean.

You have the makings of a great hunting rifle there. I would think about a smaller compact type scope. Too many people are enamoured with large lens variable type scopes, and such a scope would look out of place on this rifle and make it look overbalanced. You could use a fixed 3 or 4 power, or a smaller 2-7 variable and never have to worry about using it in almost any hunting situation in Canada.

I'd go with the 2-7 myself. Pretty versatile scope and not to big in dimensions.

Looks like a nice project you have there. Should be fun to put it together. Make sure you update us with the results.

My gunsmith will be back in 4 days and give me a call. Then he will blue, drill & tapp 1 piece base ( conventional mount ) and put together action while I finish my laminate stock.

I chose an older M8 because it worked best for eye relief being a longer scope, I find these actions long for me and have problems attaining optimum eye relief.

Nice rifle, but your barrel seems to be sticking out high at the front and the rear tang too low in that stock with the action sitting a bit high at the ejection port side too, you may need to remove some bedding to get a flush fit and lower that barrel.

selig: great work! the gun came out nice and a 6.5 x 55 is going to be a good shooter as well. I personally think you did everything right.

Maybe add a set of sling swivels and a sling to carry the thing?

Good Job and something you'll be proud to show off for along time to come.

Lower rings don't allow scope clearance, that is the one downside I find with M96 sporters.
Also I chose an older M8 because it worked best for eye relief being a longer scope, I find these actions long for me and have problems attaining optimum eye relief, I also shortened the Boyds stock 3/4 in.

You can get a trigger with side safety and do away with the swing safety. Get lower rings on there
