Found this in a LGS near camp

Thanks tiraiq and TimC. And thanks everyone else for your input. I may have missed something though. How do I know this is a Canadian rifle? The large 'C' stamp?

Standard butt stock, no? Weren't short butt stocks labelled B for Bantam? - OP, nice rifle, skrew that, awesome rifle - if you got that for under a grand, in the condition described you did very well (that's what it would go for here, and go quickly, I might add). Canadian marked No1's are pretty rare in any condition and an original, numbers matching one is the Holy Grail for a lot of folks. So, it's a very desirable, fairly rare rifle in excellent original condition - you don't find that every day.

PS post this in 'milsurps' the guys there will drool.

Moved this thread here. Hoping to learn as much as I can about this rifle.

My knowledge of these rifles is limited. I know it's a SMLE MKIII made in 1917 in 303 calibre. It was owned by a collector who had it stored for close to 60yrs before he passed away. His wife kept it for a number of years before deciding to get rid of his collection.
The bore is near mint. Removed the wood and cleaned out the dust/lint. Metal underneath is perfect. No cracks in the wood. Parts have the same number with the exception of the magazine. And yes, I put 20 rounds of Winchester 180 grain through it. No issues at all. Actually a real pleasure to shoot.

I found some of the markings on the internet but not all. Can anyone give me some more details on the history of this rifle?

Much appreciated.

Pictures up. Tried to copy and pasted the whole thing from the other thread. Pictures don't go with it. Trying to get some pictures of the bore however not having much success.

As for price, there was some negotiations and ended up paying $400 for this rifle. Bought a few off this fella. Last one was a really nice Savage model 745. Didn't know Savage made an Auto 5 variant until I saw this one. Anyway, back to the Enfield. What I have been advised thus far is it's a Canadian issue, possibly issued to West Coast Militia (would like to get that confirmed). Not sure what the other markings stand for. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

She's a beauty!
That's a nice looking cleaning/service cradle as well.... who makes that if you don't mind?

$400 well spent.

no Bantum is even shorter then the short.

B = Bantum
S = Short
L = Long
the Regular ones are not marked.

ane I beleive that the sizes are in 1/2" increments.
