Found this little guy on the doorstep

As as been alluded to, the cub is underweight, and wouldn't survive the winter on his own. Likely not enough food and also mentioned, a late born cub. Not surprised this one and his mother left the den in the middle of winter to seek any food. Wonder what happened to his mother?

It makes one wonder if the other bears in the area gathered enough food to get through the winter - sad to say, there will be a bit of bears dieing off in their dens as well as more getting out and heading to cities, towns - wherever they can smell food.

Spring 2008 will be interesting, and depending on winter's severity, should be lots of bear sightings and encounters in the Sudbury area.

Ya I would have done the same!
and in the spring than worry about the little bastard in my garbage cans LOL!

But that is a very nice thing to see, I agree most of the hunters here would have saved him to give him a chance.

Cute little guy. Hope he survives and stays out of trouble. I was watching National Geographic and they tranquilized a sow that was sleeping in a winter den. They dragged her out and there were cubs, probably nursing. They had very short snouts, looked just like teddy bears, so I can see where they got the idea for how teddy bears should look, arms and legs sticking straight out to the sides at that age. Not sure they should have disturbed them like that for a show, but hopefully they knew what they were doing. Just makes me wonder about when they were born to be in so young and in a winter den.

BTW, Whats he eating here?

Apples :D he also had some steak and some porridge  LOL

That's great work.
I hope that others would do the same.
One little thing though, a healthy bear cub can be very much a handful. That from a bear handler MNR friend of mine.
By the way, did you by chance report it to the media, along with the fact that hunters care more for wildlife that the antis?
Make a good story.

Niiiice

Nice little bugger ;) , good move for saving him, now his chances of surviving just improved by 100's, without your help, he probably would of died in that cold weather.

My grand father had 2 cubs he found during the 50's, he kept them for about 6 months and released them, they are nice at that age but he will grow fast and will be hard to handle, good luck. The only neg about it is that he will not be afraid of human anymore and that could be a bad thing... for him in the futur..

Where will he stay for winter? Maybe some park official or zoo could take him. I recall reading an article where a baby cub was introduced in a den with other cubs and the sow accepted him.

Let us know what will happen to him.

Friend of mine had one this fall as well, the sow was killed in a mva. Fattened it up and built a den for it out of an old dog house. Unfortunately the wolves found it and killed it.

Good job! We had one in a camp for a couple of days, then we all decided better call the F&W officers to relocate it before it grew to used to people. It would make an great pet if it didn't grow up and have the sharp claws and all! :)

Too cool!

I would have been so temped to invite the little guy into the house, and keep it around for a while. But that probably isn't the best idea.

Good job!
