I bought a gun collection from a gentleman a couple years ago and in the collection was a registered pellet rifle.
I asked the guy why I had to transfer the pellet rifle to my name and he said the muzzle velocity was more than 500 fps.
Now I've been kicking this thing around for a while (shanghi China Model 62) and to tell you the truth, if I shot a normal phone book from 15 feet it doesn't sink in 1/4 of the way.
Now....I think the power of this rifle is below 500 fts. Can I deactivate this from the system if I prove it's less that 500 fps?
How do I prove this?
If not...Is there something I can do to "strengthen the power" in it? :D
Much appreciated....

The registration of the firearm is based on two factors, actually. Many people focus on the velocity, but it has to be a combination of greater than 500FPS AND generating more than 4.2FPE (foot pounds of energy). BOTH have to be true in order for it to be classified as a firearm.

As for determining velocity, you can always get a Shooting Chrony (I have the base F1 model, about $125.00 or so). That will give you an exact readout of the muzzle velocity.
