I recently heard a rumor that a good way to clean a pistol frame is in the dishwasher.

I can't see any huge problems with this as all of my guns are either Polymer and or aluminum.

Has anybody tried this?

The frame itself may be made from aluminum or polymer, but all the internal parts (i.e. hammer, trigger group, various springs, etc.) are carbon steel.

The main problem would be from the detergent.

If you did the cycle with no detergent, there would be no real problem.

mmmmm all the chemicals and teflon particles in the dishwasher. Getting all over dinner plates and glasses. Nothing like a little CPL to help food I don't like slide down.

I've heard of some people doing this or even cleaning brass by doing this.

Personally unsure about this not from a cleaning perspective but from a contamination perspective. I know things (oil, grit, lead, and other carcinogines) should all get flushed out by the very nature of a dishwasher :)

But are you really sure? and then you'll clean your dishes in it afterwards?

Maybe a separate dishwasher to wash gun stuff?

Done it with stripped frame, barrel, & cylinder of 58 Remington Revolver worked great. I cannot state this enough. DO NOT GET CAUGHT BY THE WIFE! She will have a $hit of epic proportion.

I don't see the point, cleaning guns is part of the process
Anyways, there is no way than niner would let me do it. WOuld coust too many points :p

well......if you ran an empty cycle after the gun, WITH detergent I don't see why not. Never done it myself, but I've heard it's a great way to get Cosmoline off. I just use the hand shower in the bath tub. (when the wife ISN'T home :D)

I would recommend using the dishwasher for all gun cleaning, use the new power ball cleaner from Electrosol, gets the dirt out and leaves them smelling lemony clean, doesn't even leave those embarrassing water spots.

It would be pretty stupid/unhealthy to clean dishes in the same DW after you clean a gun in it...

oh after you can put it in the microvawe to dry out :)

With all the crap that is already in the food you eat, I wouldn't worry about a little carbon & unburned gunpowder... Eating that would probably not even be the worst thing you eat that week.

Ya, put your Glock in the microwave.....:p

Off topic a bit , but interresting
Actually, Not a gun, but it is a emergency way of destroying a CD or DVD than you don't want anyone to be able to get the info

It is also nice to watch, don't put it too long, you don't want the cd to melt (10-12 sec depending on watts)

I take it that you like to eat lead particles and other carcinogens?

That is just plain STUPID!

Do you think I'm washing dishes at the sametime? I would not use dishwasher detergent, just hot water. As ontgunner pointed out a good oilling immediately afterwards. And rinse washer with another cycle to remove the evidence. Unless you are worried about residual contaminates in your washer, it is a fast & easy way to clean heavy crude off metal parts.:50cal:
