My buddy has an SKS that used to be franken-pinned, but the pin broke away or something. Its been like that since he bought it. There's just the hole in the mag now, where the 'pin' (rivet/bolt) used to be. The 'pin' itself is long gone I guess. Any suggestions for the best/easiest way to make her legal again?

I'll put a vote in here for a button head screw and nut on the other side, since you really should counter sink before using a flat head screw, and that doesn't work in sheet metal.
The button head will leave a little bump, but it will tighten up better than the flat head screw.
Also, get one in black oxide if you can.

I had the same problem. I just used a bolt and a nut, cut/filed the bolt to length. One thing, the modification must be "permanent" so either epoxy it in there or file the head off, etc to avoid legal issues.

I had the same thing happen to one of my sks's. I drilled and tapped the old plug for a #10 machine screw, then screded it back on from the outside, making sure the "hole" was fit together. Epoxy on the screw before being screwed in. Then ground and polished the screw head so it was just a flat disc so you couldn't wasily take it out. I then soldered it from the inside. It held up for the 200 rounds that i put theough the rifle, but i don't know about ling term because the rifle got sold.

I filed the hole square and used a 5/16 NC carriage bolt with a nut and washer on the inside. A small tack weld on the threads next to the nut will keep it permanent. I blued the head, and it's not really even noticable.

Could use a really flat head bolt long enough to only allow 5 rounds. Nut on the inside. Cut the bolt to length if you can't find one.

Mine just has kind of a mushroom shaped pin, brazes in there. 5/16 carriage bolt, cut to the right length and brazed in, would make it almost original.

Grizz

Sorry folks... just bolts alone won't cut it unless you go the extra mile as the others have said and ground off the head and such.... read the criminal code regulations......... Pretty sure they're looking for a permanent way to pin it, and a bolt just may not cut it in a court of law...

(4) A cartridge magazine described in subsection (1) that has been altered or re-manufactured so that it is not capable of containing more than five or ten cartridges, as the case may be, of the type for which it was originally designed is not a prohibited device as prescribed by that subsection if the modification to the magazine cannot be easily removed and the magazine cannot be easily further altered so that it is so capable of containing more than five or ten cartridges, as the case may be.

(5) For the purposes of subsection (4), altering or re-manufacturing a cartridge magazine includes

(a) the indentation of its casing by forging, casting, swaging or impressing;

(b) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a steel or aluminum casing, the insertion and attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or aluminum, as the case may be, or of a similar material, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method; or

(c) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a casing made of a material other than steel or aluminum, the attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or of a material similar to that of the magazine casing, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method or by applying a permanent adhesive substance, such as a cement or an epoxy or other glue.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the suggestions & info.

Change it to a Promag removable, or we sell the factory steel fixed mags.

I may just go that way. I say 'I' because my friend and I worked out a deal and I'll be buying the '54 Soviet SKS off him. It's a refurb that's already been in good use & needs a refinish, so I'm getting the rifle and 550 rounds of ammo for around $200 (half for the rifle, half for the ammo). No taxes or shipping fees makes it a great deal. I'm going to add a choate scope mount (which I've already ordered from you) and tactical scope. I might just consider a different mag system aswell.

Unlike a lot of people, the original SKS stock is a nice fit for me, which is strange considering I'm a huge guy. So no need to drop $100-200 on a new stock. It looks like I could have a nicely scoped SKS for $300, so I'm going for it. Plus I'm going to have some fun with a custom refinish on the old stock.
