I have some free time on my hands and I am curious as to whether or not it would be worth it to free float the barrel on my savage 110. I have heard from some that all guns benefit from free floating and from others that certain guns like pressure on the barrel. I know people here will probably know what is best so that's why I am asking you.

How does it shoot as is? If it is shooting sub MOA as it sits right now, then I'ld leave it alone. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.....if it is printing like a shotgun, then perhaps bedding and free floating are in order...

Shooters having too much free time is what funds a lot of gunsmiths.
Some rifles do indeed like and some do not. Free floating may or may not improve your groups. The only way to find out is to try it. Fortunately, if it doesn't, a dab of bedding compound just aft of the end of the fore stock will put the pressure point back in. Mind you, I totally agree with gunasauras. If it shoots well now, leave it alone.
If you want to play with something go buy a rifle is mediocre condition and play with that. Bubba'd milsurps are good for self-teaching. Plentiful and not expensive.

Free floating's easy enough to do - try it and see. And if you don't remove too much material, you can easily re-bed the barrel if necessary, and no one will even notice.

From what I've heard though, sporter-weight barrels benefit less from free floating than do heavy barrels.

I haven't altered any of my guns - if they cam free floated, that's the way I kept them. I have corrected issues though - bedded barrels that were not floated for a more consistent fit & pressure, and cleared out extra space in a couple that were occasionally making contact when they shouldn't have been.

Savage bolt rifles are generously free floated unless it's a really old one with a warped stock. As for tuning, my ZKK 602 shot like #### when I got it a few years ago. Floating the barrel and bedding the action in spite of what some experts will say made a P.O.S. into sub M.O.A.
