Free Floating a Vanguard.

About 15 years ago (Jeez, where does the time go!) I bought a Vanguard 300 WM from a friend. Had maybe 20 rounds through it. Had a wood stock, with built in pressure point at the tip.

On a good day, it would group about 3 inches. Finally got fed up with it and had a Pacific Research synth put on the rifle, free floating. (Borden bought out the company since.)

First sight in group, factory ammo, was 5/8".

Checked out sight in before last season, put 3 Federal Premium 130 gr TTSX in 1/2", same as the last time I checked it. (Rated at 3500 fps, but no longer available from Federal.)

Vanguards are a helluva good rifle, and IMHO about any rifle, when in doubt - free float it! Always worked for me so far.

I used to routinely free-float and bed every bolt gun that came through my hands, and laughed at hot melt bedding and factory ammo. With the S2 Vanguards coming with hot melt bedding, forend pressure and a 1 MOA quarantee with factory ammo I've modified that position to "If it's not broken, don't fix it".
