I am going to be replacing the stock on an old sporterized No1 rifle and I'm wondering if its possible to eliminate the barrel band and free float the barrel. From what it looks like to me, if I bed the front part of the action and the chamber area of the barrel as well as the bottom metal, especially at the rear of the trigger guard, it should have enough support. Has anybody done this or floated the barrel another way? The stock will be wood, not synthetic if that makes a difference.

I heard that the Brits pressure point them somewhere, but can't remember where to get the best accuracy from them as the action is quite flexible. Hopefully someone with better knowledge can explain. There's an article by Charles Young about it in a Precision Shooting magazine.
