I don't know if anyone has noticed this before, but you can get free topographical maps for printing out off on iPhoto on a Mac.
I was fiddling around in iPhoto the other day and I was looking at the "Places" feature. Upon zooming all the way in(while on the "terrain" setting), I noticed that there was a reasonably accurate topographical map. One of the nice parts is that you can switch between satellite and topo, overlaying them and keeping the scale the same. This is great for seeing paths and logging roads that are not "officially" there and included on the topo.
You can then take screen shots and print them for using as maps by holding "Command+Shift+4".
This probably won't do anything for those running straight GPS, but for the map and compass crowd, I hope this helps.
