Freezer for Moose

Seriously? Would that not hold multiple moose?

Should I rephrase: what size freezer would you use to store one northern B.C. bull moose?

I have 2 commercial grade upright freezers..... pretty much same size as a large single door fridge. Saves floor space, easier to move and the shelves sure save the back from leaning down into a deep freeze to rummage around for stuff. Fish in one and game in the other but occasionally the game is in both if it's been a good year.

Considering an upright because I live in an apartment.

Hard to find this stuff in town though, should have thought this through before moose season started...

I think mine is 16cu ft. Over the years, I've "topped" it off twice, both times with a full moose and whitetail/mule deer, whatever else was shot was donated.

The other years it holds three deer and some frozen goodies!

I live "up country", due to time constraints I will probably be having it professionally cut.

Good to hear 16 can hold a moose and a deer. I think the largest I've seen in town is 14.4 upright, hopefully it will do. I am planning to get a moose or elk in september and go deer hunting later in the year. Hopefully I will have some success.

Deep freeze are a pain in the ass to go through when they are full but you can stack them from top to bottom with ridiculous amounts of meat. Make sure the meat is fully frozen prior to filling the freezer if you are going to jam pack it otherwise what's in the middle won't freeze. Good hunting!

Are you looking to freeze the moose while your up country or when at home ?
Figure on a 65% yield and adjust your freezer accordingly.

Consider having the butcher cut it boneless, if you are not cutting it yourself.
Much more efficient use of freezer space.

Upright freezers are great for keeping your stuff organized and being able to find stuff. But a chest freezer of the same CU will hold way more meat than an upright. One of the mid size freezers from Costco (I can’t remember how many CU they are, but they cost a few hundred bucks) normally holds a whole moose once it’s in boneless packages, plus a little bit of other stuff. But there’s also differences in moose. My biggest bull was close to 1000 lbs on the hook, my smallest was almost 300......

Another vote for the upright freezer, we have a small chest freezer and a full size upright. The upright sees the most use, chest freezer is for overflow and the bulk of the veg from the garden we freeze for winter use. We live rural and ordered it from home depot online me iirc, they have a really cheap delivery charge or did when we bought it and a couple other appliances two years ago.
