Not sure if this link will work. But its an interesting video of freezing up different rifle platforms and seeing how they perform. Looks like +1 for Ak pattern rifles. I’d really like to see the sks go through this test.

Not really a surprising test as he's adding ice to the actions. The mag release issues and dead triggers were all induced by ice build up, not necessarily the guns being frozen.

As he mentions though, it's not an all encompassing test.

Pretty nice range.

I'm really not sure what these tests prove other than if you pour enough water on a gun, it will freeze up solid.
The only thing helping the AK in some instances is the massive tolerances between bearing surfaces, allowing the water to drain off before freezing solid.

well as of today we had -46c and the t81 was not locked: i did not try to poor water on it but just let the rifle outside. many trappers here like it like they liked the sks and or vz.

Long safety lever, rock-n-lock magazines and the fact that you can slam the bolt handle with enough force to break the ice help as well.

Yup, if you dunk a gun in water in say -10c then leave it for several hours it might not work, regardless of what gun it is.

Most of the time once you get past -5c snow is powdery and doesn't stick to a gun that is of comparable temperature. That's the key, not having a warm gun. Don't take your gun indoors and make sure the muzzle is clear of any snow/blockages.

With appropriate lubricant, avoidance of dunking guns in water and keeping your gun clear of snow the vast majority of semi autos will be ok. Materials is key, some metals/polymers get brittle in colder temperatures.

Obviously the AK is an absolute king with Ice, but it also didn't do too well with InRange's mud test, but then again it does very well with dust tests.
