French and HK416

I don't know about you guys, but I'd be pretty happy to own a "s**tty" FAMAS...

I wouldn't take one if I wasn't supplied with ammunition. Good luck finding proprietary French ammunition for the thing. I believe even the French army has difficulty finding sources of new ammunition for the F1.

The French Special Forces get the Good guns ... (2008)

I wonder what the Legion will get?

I believe FPembleton is refering to the fact that the F1/G1 requires steel-cased 5.56 ammo due to overpressure issues. The G2 variant with the new barrel rifling does away with the overpressure issue allowing use of brass-cased SS109 etc, but is only in low distribution.

If I was allowed to have a FAMAS, I wouldn't kick it out of bed for eating crackers... it just wouldn't be there every night.

Cheers,

O'Kelly's Boys

My understanding is that it's not an overpressure issue.

The Famas uses a delay locking leaver. This is similar to the HK delayed roller locked guns. When the case is locked in the chamber (and fired) it swells, expands on firing and sticks to the chamber walls. In a rotating bolt gun the rotation of the bolt, when unlocking, helps to break the case free. The HK and Famas systems don't rotate. The HK engineers put fluting in the chamber to aid in extraction of the hot expanded case. The French did not with the Famas. One way you can get away with not aiding the expanded case is to use steel cased ammo. This is what the French did with the Famas.

This is why some say that the Famas isn't totally reliable unless Steel Cased ammo is used. When I used the Famas with the Legion (20 + years ago) it was totally reliable but we only used French Army ammo.

PS: The FN Fal does not have fluting or a rotating bolt either. This is why there were so many reliability issues with it. Anyone who used an old FN C2 knows on full auto they consistently went "Bang Bang Jam" all the time. FN tried to put a demon strong extractor on the FAL to over come this. The gun did work not bad in semi auto. The HK G3's I used and trained with never jammed, ever. Far superior weapon. That's my FAL RANT for all the FAL lovers out there.

The soldiers with the FAMAS have their bayonets fixed? Maybe after the
parade they dig for truffles while the "lucky ones" provide cover for them.

Maybe the new rifles don't have the implements to fix them with yet? Oh there's that "ethnic slamming" again! My bad! LOL

Well as a HK Fan boy and 416 lover, I wouldn't knock the C8 too much, it's a great weapon. There does seem to be a migration to the 416 by some C8 / C7 users.

Dutch love waisting money I see.

C8 is a awesome gun and the HK 416 is no real leap forward "not worth changing your inventory over"

Can I ask why??????????

Looking cool does not count ;)

Because your rifles are hardly Canadian anymore, and HK makes the best small arms most of the time all the time!

Yes there are other company's out their like KAC but they are smaller, and i'm an HK Fanboy:p

Look a brand new C8/C7A2 straight out the factory is great, but the HK416 is several steps up, with training though much of this is curtailed, but the 416 is a newer better made rifle!

And for a soldier like me, with my spectacular skills i need my rifle to keep up and be able to maintain functionality with high amounts rounds being expended and "Colt Canada" rifles can't do that!

They are great rifle but the HK416 and few other manufactures that have followed after the 416, have taken the M4 design to the 21st century!

"It really is leaps and bounds ahead of predecessors" :p:stirthepot2:

But seriously for spec ops at least this is much better rifle, and the higher level of performance shows!
