The French Armed forces are adopting a variant of the Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS to replace all current military service pistols, including the MAC 1950 and the G1, a domestically produced Beretta 92 variant. The new French service pistol has an FDE colored frame, threaded barrel, front cocking serrations, suppressor height night sights and is cut for the Glock MOS modular optic mounting system.

Meanwhile in Canada we’ve been talking about replacing the browning HP since I joined and when it became "official" the timeline was something like 10 years from the beginning of the project until the first delivery...
 
The procurement process in place is... Well... Facepalm

IMHO, just make the decision & be done with it. The G17 is a good choice.

it s a shame that has been the case for a while. we were shooting israeli 5.56 and that was long long time ago. but the g17 is the good choice taken now a while ago and the gendarmerie and police nationale will adopt it. a whole premiere with all forces having the same handgun. special forces, gign and raid are using already glock.

Forget that France is replacing the FAMAS with HK rifles?

You don't realize how integrated Europe has become, calling France and Austria "foreign" countries is becoming a very blurry distinction.
 
We are just doing the very slow motion adoption of the SIG P320, just waiting for SIG to work out all the bugs like it going off occasionally by itself.
 
I wonder if the P320 will have the service life the Glock has had? Not criticism, but a legit question... Having a pretty good idea of how long the Canadian military will be stuck with their new purchase, I hope it's bullet proof.

No, what’s foolish is having to use 80yr old sidearms while not being able to get a replacement because of the demand it be made in country. Or paying 4 Billion for six ships when other countries like Ireland build essentially the same vessel for $60 million a piece. Or refurbishing old airplanes so many times it would just be cheaper to replace them on schedule. Or attempting to develop a new Maritime helicopter in house when there are a half-dozen acceptable off the shelf alternatives that cost 1/10th and can be delivered 10 times faster.

I’ll take France’s way of doing procurement in a heartbeat. Their military, despite all the jokes, is one of the best equipped, most combat experienced, and most effective in NATO.
