Enfield

The Ottomans must have captured quite a few Enfields from the "visiting" British Empire forces at Gallipoli. Some of these were converted to 8mm by the Ottomans and Turks and they called these "tufiki ingilizi" or "English rifle".

Some Enfields were converted to 8mm and a few imported in to the U.S. This does not appear to be very common. The Turks called these "tufiki ingilizi" or "English rifle".

The Turks took Enfields captured from the British after Gallipoli, and converted them to fire the 8mm cartridge. Pretty ingeneous idea, actually, and quite a rare rifle too.

I got to handle one of those about 10 years ago, a dealer friend in Florida bought one from Century arms. It was a very crude conversion, no way I would have fired it.

Ooooooo, I WANTS one o' they!

Not just Gallipoli, either. Remember, the Brits surrendered an entire Army at Kut-el-Amara.

LOTSA toys for Johnny Turk to play with.

Rare hardly describes it. I have been looking for one of them for 40 years. I missed one in Spokane in 1990. I just couldn't afford it. The rifle I saw, looked very decent. I would have shot it, just to see how well it did.

Turkish armorers did some very interesting conversions IMHO. They weren't held back by preconceived ideas. They were handed a bunch of weapons and told to make them work for a certain cartridge. I can't see them issuing unsafe conversions to their troops any more than any other nation would.

The rifle in the pic looks good from what I can see.

I read someplace on the web years ago that the ones that saw fair use by the Turks all had excessive headspace and all had very sticky bolts on shooting. The 8mm ammo the Turks made was loaded very hot by most standards, I know the Turk ammo I have shoots at around 3000 fps out of my Turk Mauser. I would be very vary about shooting one with ex-mil or European loaded 8mm ammo especially so without first checking the headspace.
