It was missing many parts, cartridge elevator assembly parts, rear sight leaf. butt plate, barrel band screws, and cleaning rod.
I found one recently from Tradeex that would't fire and bought it for a parts gun since it had most of what I needed minus the barrel bands and screws. Some bubba sporterized the parts guns. It wouldn't fire due to broken rimfire firing pin that also jammed the cartridge elevator in the up position. Seems previous owners did not know what oil and grease is for.
Finally put it together last night and it works fine.

Anyone know a Canadian source for the barrel band screws and cleaning rod?

Got it with the Black spray Goth makeup on the metal parts it had. Added missing parts from a parts donor Vetterli.

Makes a distintive deep Ca-chung sounds when the cartridge elevator loads a round.
Bolt action with a lever gun feed mechanism.

Was Vetterli was the only bolt action designed this way or were there other designs similar in function? Most of those I have seen used something closer to Kropatschek design.

I love my vetterli so much that I pulled down my 3 band snider and hung the vetterli up over the fireplace. That way I can look at it while sitting on the couch.

Which part of the design are you referring to?
Turned down bolt handle? Loading gate on receiver? Tube magazine? Opposed bolt lugs?

That feed mechanism on the Swiss Vetterli was lifted (stolen) straight from the 1866 Winchester.

Winchester sued for violation of Henry's patents.

Swiss replied that the patent was never filed with them, kept on building the rifles!

Yes, it is noisy but it is also positive and there is NO double-feeding, which is what the Kropatschek patents were all about.

Things are built like a bank-vault; that symmetrical double-locking bolt was 'way ahead of its time.

They were the most advanced rifle design of their time in 1869 for any military. By the end they where the most obsolete. Unique, interesting. An easy change over to centerfire and you have an excellent shooter with black powder.

and a better shooter with Smokeless...

The Italian used the Vetterli action as well as the Swiss.

The Italians adopted the M1870 Vetterli as a single shot in 1870.

In 1887 it became the M1870/87 with the addition of the 4 shot Vitali magazine.

In 1916 it became the M1870/87/16 with the change to the Mannlicher clip loading magazine in 6.5x52mm Carcano cartridge, due to war time shortages of rifles

Just got one of these. What an interesting piece of history. Surprisingly good condition considering mine is nearly 150 years old.
