Friend gave me a Vetterli many years ago

From what I've read the earlier Swiss were made of iron and the later 81 switched to steel parts? Would they be more durable or is that a mute point at the century mark?

And are they all rimfire originally ? Would require CF alteration?

All Italian Vetterlis are centerfire, that being said the only Italian Vetterli which is remotely available is the 70/87/15 (or 70/87/16 rifles depending on who you are reading).

All Swiss Vetterlis are rimfire (unless previously converted to centerfire by someone else). They are also the most common versions of Vetterlis available.

Note converting Swiss Vetterlis to centerfire also kills antique status (unless it is a cadet rifle), so that is also something to keep in mind.

Yes, but what good is an antique you can't shoot?

I keep an unconverted bolt around. Original or no bolt in - antique. Centerfire bolt in - something to shoot. Repeat.

The problem is?

I never said don't do it, or to do it, simply that making it a centerfire makes it non-restricted, something to consider when doing this conversion.

Personally I am also looking at getting into Vetterlis, my plan being to buy a sporter for cheap, convert the bolt on that, then use that for the rest of the rifles.

i think i am broken... i have been wanting a swiss vetterli for some time. I know if my wife sees one she will want one too. she has been eyeing my k31 since the first time she racked a round through it.
